4.0 out of 5 stars Quick-paced fun.
I might like this book better than Old Yeller. While not quite the emotional classic as its predecessor, Savage Sam is fast-paced, full of action, and brimming with effective period detail. I can't imagine any 10 year old and up boy not loving it. In the book, the children from Old Yeller are captured by Indians, and their father and the other menfolk set out on the...

3.0 out of 5 stars I did not like Savage Sam very much.
There are two reasons why I did not care for this book. One reason is it had alot of killing and blood in it. A lot of of settlers and Indians got hurt and killed. Another reason is it had alot of words that were hard for me to understand. The book would have been better if Fred Gipson had written the words in a different dialect. Even though I did not enjoy the book I...

I might like this book better than Old Yeller. While not quite the emotional classic as its predecessor, Savage Sam is fast-paced, full of action, and brimming with effective period detail. I can't imagine any 10 year old and up boy not loving it. In the book, the children from Old Yeller are captured by Indians, and their father and the other menfolk set out on the trail with Old Yeller's son to retrieve them. I gave it four out of five stars because I reserve full rating for a handfull of absolute classics. This isn't far behind.

4.0 out of 5 stars 11 year old Sadie's Review, February 11, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Savage Sam (Perennial Library) (Paperback)
Savage Sam is an exciting and adventurous book. It takes place in the foothills of Texas in the past. Travis, the oldest son of 2, is working out in the field when he hears the Indians coming. Rounding up all the horses, Travis, his brother, Little Arliss, and another girl, Lisbeth, the Indians try to fight off Savage Sam, viciously fighting for his master's life. Finally the Indians kick him off and ride off into the prairie with their loot. Over hill and dale, river and stream, the horses run at a death pace. Their riders are clinging to their bare backs, and Savage Sam is chasing after them, though far away. Travis tries to devise a plan to escape but is rounded up again. Will Travis, Little Arliss, and Lisbeth ever escape or be rescued? Still, Savage Sam is following tirelessly. He is getting closer now, though! The Indians are getting a little riled up, too. They keep going faster and faster! In addition, Sam is getting closer and closer! This is a wonderful cook but a little violent. I recommend this book to older elementary (5th grade) and young adults. It is an action-packed book full of love and tragedy. You'll find out when you read this amazing book.

My 10 year old son is reading Savage Sam..... he can not put the book down! I caught him in bed with the flashlight after the light were suppose to be out for bed-time. It has the same characters as Old Yeller and Sam is the offspring of Old Yeller...... Truely a great book.... an adventure for children....Little Arliss was captured by Indians in this book.

I think this book was awesome !!!! We just got through reading it in class. My class and myself really got into this story. We didn't want to stop reading, and that should say ALOT for 7th graders!!!! I feel Mr. Gipson did a great job with this story line. I loved Old Yeller, and I love this one as well. I hope there is more to come !!!!!! Keep up the GOOD work.

5.0 out of 5 stars This was the book that made me a reader!!!!!!, November 19, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Savage Sam (Perennial Library) (Paperback)
When I was 9 years old I had no idea who I was or what I wanted to be. My teacher "made" me read this book, and it gave me an answer to one of "lifes many questions." I was going to be a reader !!!!!!! A little reminiscent of "Old Yeller", but a whole lot more adventurous!!!! This book kept me going from start to finish. I can't wait to share it with my 7 year old son!!!!!!!!

Did you like the book old yeller? If yes then you will love this book about his son Savage Sam. Sam is a lot like his father. He would fight the cats just for some fresh milk. When Sam and Little arliss go out hunting with out the knowledge of the raiding Indians. When Travis and lisbeth go out looking for them and find Sam and little arliss in a hole fighting with a bobcat. They forget about that until after the fight when the get captured by the Comanche. Will Savage Sam be able to save them read and find out.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Savage Sam (Perennial Library) (Paperback)
This is a really good book. If you like Old Yeller and other adventure/dog stories (Sounder, Jim Kjlgaard books like Stormy and Big Red, ect.) this is a book for you. It has all the excitingness of Old Yeller, and is (nearly) as good.

I saw the movie as a child and wanted to keep it in our library (book form). Our copyies of it and Old Yeller had worn out, so I took the opportunity to get again. It is of good quality and should last us quite a while! Thank you!!!!!
