Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Whether it's the invisible chat room jockey pumping penny stocks or the silver-haired Peter Lynch hawking Fidelity Investments, finding financial advice these days is pretty easy, and for most of us the real problem is not getting advice, it's getting good advice. Which is something that Terry Savage dispenses in good measure in The Savage Truth on Money.

It's not that Savage has found a new way to get rich. She hasn't. What makes this book work is her commonsense approach to attaining financial security. At the heart of Savage's advice is the notion that getting ahead is a matter of "self-discipline," which "means making knowledgeable decisions based on a rational assessment of likely results and then sticking to your decisions in the face of emotional upheaval." Forget about sticking your head in the sand--for Savage, knowledge is power, and knowledge begins when you examine your own relationship to money. She encourages getting online as way to manage your finances, educate yourself, and seek out new opportunities. The book is filled with insights on topics such as risk management, investing in mutual funds, saving for college, and buying insurance.

Savage's experience as a financial journalist (print, television, online), stockbroker, the first woman member of the Chicago Board Options Exchange, as well as her service on the Board of Directors of McDonald's and Devon Energy Corporation brings a air of credibility that's hard to find in books of this ilk. The Savage Truth on Money is for people who think seriously about their money, no matter how smart they think they are. --Harry C. Edwards --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly

Short on hype and long on wisdom that has withstood the test of time, Savage's latest is as useful as a personal finance book can be. In 10 chapters that eachinclude a recap of the main points, Savage (Terry Savage Talks Money, etc.), the personal finance commentator for PBS's Nightly Business Report, lays out the facts about acquiring and managing money, buying insurance, putting children through college, saving for retirement and estate planning. Among her "Savage Truths": "the most powerful money emotions are fear and greed.... noticing the symptoms and gaining the courage to surmount these emotions is the first task in managing money." She goes on to address a wide array of financial issues, including how to find your credit rating and how to check the status of your company's 401K plan. She warns of the pitfalls of different types of IRAs and insurance policies, and she takes a conservative approach to stocks, advising readers to invest only what they can afford and to stay in for the long haul rather than seek a quick killing. Information is divided into digestible chunks, and each chapter concludes with a "to do" list. For example, at the end of her chapter on women and money, Savage advises women to set up their own retirement plans whether or not they work outside the home. A model of clear-headedness, Savage is the ideal guide to the daunting personal finance landscape. Money Book Club main selection; BOMC alternate selection.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the best I have read so far!, September 4, 2003
By A Customer
This book is outstanding for beginners (like me). A very easy read yet so complex at the same time. "Aunt Terry" shows genuine concern for her readers and practily holds your hand through the concepts.

This book is very thorough and up to date unlike other books out there that are 7 years old and way out of date.

2 thumbs up. A great book. Very pragmatic and powerful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent author review and book, September 20, 2003

I enjoyed this book by Terry Savage. My wife bought this book along with The Road to Wealth and The Laws of Money by Suze Orman.

In many ways, Savage pushes Orman on financial advice and savvy and is a witty writer as well. Both have credentials to write financial books, unlike other authors.

I also felt that Ms. Savage showed class in her review, thanking her fans and clearing the air o n the Microsoft issue. And at least she (Savage) writes reviews using her own name, not an alias as some other authors do.

Overall good good written by a person of quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars To My readers, September 7, 2000
By
I thank the many thousands of people who have purchased and profited from my books, and those who have taken the time to write a review. But I'd like to make one correction: I do not "work for" Microsoft. I write columns for their www.MoneyCentral.com website and moderate a discussion board there, for which I am compensated. But I am also paid to write columns for the Chicago Sun-Times, Barrons Online and Mature Outlook Magazine, as well. I also do commentaries for PBS' Nightly Business Report, for which I am paid. Further, I made every effort to mention Quicken software every time I mentioned Microsoft's Money product -- except where describing different features. I pride myself on my reputation for independent journalism and hold myself to the highest standards. Sincerely, Terry Savage PS Couldn't post a review without stars!
