Book Description

Mountain Man December 1, 2009
Santa Clara, Colorado, is 24 hours by train from the land where Smoke Jensen found peace and prosperity on his Sugarloaf Ranch. But somehow, Smoke can't stay away from Santa Clara - and from an evil cattle baron hiding a murderous past. For Smoke, it starts at a high-class auction for a pureblood Hereford bull. Smoke wins the bidding - and earns the hatred of Pogue Quentin, Santa Clara's leading citizen and a man living on bloodshed and lies. Then Smoke's friend Pearlie drifts to Santa Clara. And when Pearlie runs afoul of Quentin, all hell will break loose. Now Smoke Jensen is heading to Santa Clara to face a man who already wants him dead - but Pogue Quentin never met anything like the fire of a mountain man...

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best, December 13, 2009

This review is from: Savagery of The Mountain Man (Paperback)
I just finished reading Savagery of the Mountain Man. I really think it is one of the best in the Johnstone series about Smoke Jensen. Many of the books about Smoke focus on his ability to defeat large groups of outlaws using his mountain man skills. This book is a little different in that it has more of a bent toward Pearlie, Smoke's longtime friend and boss of his horse ranch. Pearlie lost his wife in a previous book, and finds that he needs time alone. In this book we find out what happens during Pearlie's travels away from the Sugarloaf ranch. In the meantime, Smoke and Sally have a story of their own, and the two tales come together nicely in the end. Even if you have never read a book about Smoke and his friends and family, I think you will enjoy this one. There is enough background provided that you will know the characters. Lots of action, more insight into other characters, and the fact that it's not just another trek into the High Lonesome with Smoke make this a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The last mountain man series, November 6, 2010
This review is from: Savagery of The Mountain Man (Paperback)
The complete set of books on the last mountain from PREACHER, thru Smoke Jenson, to Matt Jenson was really the best Series I have ever read, and prior to this I thought the WHITE INDAIN Series was the best..but Johnstone really did a great job with this series, Just a really let down not to see any more come flying out of the press..I keep watching, but all I see is the same books keep coming out, but nothing new...but I guess Johnstone ran out of time, and now things would have been in auto's & not horses's, but anyone who hasn't read this series sure is missing a great great series..course I thought PREACHER was by far the best of the series. I keep Hoping that Johnstone will come up with another true mountain man, and write some more about the men having to fight the american Indians in order to live in the old west, long before any western movement started,..I sure do miss those stories.. I can remember many many years ago of readying a book called BLACK HAWK, I got hung up on the AMERICAN INDIANS, AND THEIR STRUGGLES WITH OTHER TRIBES, AS WELL AS THE FUR TRAPPERS...BUT BACK TO THIS BOOK AND THE OTHER BOOKS ON PREACHER AND THE JENSEN FAMILY WAS TRULY A JOY TO READ...
