5.0 out of 5 stars LT's review of Savages by Shirley Conran
The book is a real page turner if you like adverture and suspense. It takes place on an island off the coase of Australia and puts the reader in an environment of contrasting culture, modern day society clashing with jungle savagery. It brings out how modern people can revert to a savage to survive. On the down side (if there is one), I would like to see how the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Perils of Pauline
I liked the trashy, dishy beginning to this book, but it got tedious. I didn't need to know every week's trials. It became like the Perils of Pauline as they were always in some dire predicament, yet somehow escaped. I also thought the ending was far too abrupt and therefore unsatisfying. Perhaps the style of this book was more popular when it was first published, as...

The book is a real page turner if you like adverture and suspense. It takes place on an island off the coase of Australia and puts the reader in an environment of contrasting culture, modern day society clashing with jungle savagery. It brings out how modern people can revert to a savage to survive. On the down side (if there is one), I would like to see how the experiences change the lives of the survivors. There are many stories that could be written from the plots and sub-plots to which Shirley Conran exposes the reader. All in all its a book that will appeal to the feminist or the hard core combat reader. Thanks for the chance to express my views.

5.0 out of 5 stars I could not put this book down!, January 28, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Savages: Savages (Paperback)
If you want to read a book that takes you away from your hum-drum life...read 'Savages' by Shirley Conran. Shirley takes the reader on a riveting ride through the unexpected perils of Paui. Shirley write of grotesque moral acts that make the reader ask the big question 'what would I do if I had to go through what the women in the story went through?...could I kill someone?...could I eat someone?...would I attempt cannablism if I was that desperate?" I must addmit that sometimes I wanted to slap some of her female characters for some of the stupid, 'female' things they did. I wanted them to grow up faster and triumph quicker...but the developement of the characters through trial and error made the story so rich and the ending that much more satisfying. I rate books on how disfunctional I become when I read them. I could not put this book down. I give it my disfunctional two thumbs up. Good reading. Thanks Shirley.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunningly realistic!, September 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Savages: Savages (Paperback)
I just finished Savages for the second time. The first time was about ten years ago and my children (now grown) remember me reading exciting parts of the book to them. This time I would have had to read the whole book to them. I work for a company where we are taken on staff trips. I can recognize each chacter in the book and on staff. I love this book and would so enjoy a sequel to it.

This book was fantastic. My Dad recommended it when I was on vacation at my folks and forgot to bring a book, am I ever glad! VERY exciting...once you get past the slow beginning, it is nearly impossible to put tthis book down. I would highly recommend it. Would LOVE to see it as a movie, or see a part II so we can see what happens to these brave women as the story continues! Wonderful writing! Well researched. READ IT!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but could have been Great!, March 27, 2006
By
This review is from: Savages (Hardcover)
I agree with most of the other 24 reviews of this book. It WAS a page turner. It was certainly more engaging than a Jackie or Joan Collins Hollywood novel.

I liked every part of this book except for the end. It DID end abruptly. After investing so much time and emotion into these characters, I would have liked to have at least a ONE PAGE summary for each character of how their experience affected and changed them! Would it have killed Ms. Conran to put in 5 pages of additional work?

I understand there was an option to adapt this novel into a TV miniseries..Does anyone know if that happened and what it was called? I would love to see it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling, June 10, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Savages (Hardcover)
It's been sometime since I've read this book but I remember it well. Both my mother who is 72 and myself have read it and I am now recommending it to my cousin in Germany to read. This story revolves around the wives of several businessmen who accompany them on a business trip to a remote location somewhere on an island. I don't remember where. The husbands end up being murdered by a group of terrorists attempting to take over the country and the wives end up trying to survive on this island by themselves. This was wonderful, a real page turner!

I have read this book 4 times and I am buying another copy today! This book should have been made into a movie YEARS AGO! The setting is even more realistic today, with so many Corporate trips it is easy to imagine these women on this island. Wonderful book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lost Control While Reading It, November 25, 2008
This review is from: Savages: Savages (Paperback)
I remember being in night school while I was reading this book. I had a major test coming up that I was not ready for. I was old enough to know better, but I HAD to find out what happened in this un-put-downable story.

I do not know to what extent Ms. Conran researched the logistical and medical aspects of the subject matter, but it sounded realistic to me. My assumption is that she did her homework. Since most of us will never find ourselves on a deserted island, this book serves as both an educational experience and a grand adventure in fiction.

By the way, I eventually did my own homework as well. I burned sufficient midnight oil to maintain my grade point average, but it was no thanks to this book!

Bravo Ms. Conran for a gripping and memorable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great vacation read, June 11, 2008

We were on vacation at a tiny resort in Mexico when I found this book in the dining room reading area. I was unfamiliar with it, and started to read it, skeptically. I was hooked! So, OK, it is a bit sensational, but the character development is good, and the story is riveting. I actually awakened in the night a few times, convinced that I was on Paui in the midst of the story. Not great literature, but a really fun vacation read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Savages by Shirley Conran, January 21, 2008
By
This review is from: Savages (Paperback)
The book was good but Conran spends the first 100 pages building the characters. From that point, the book was good. However the ending was weak. If the "beginning" was shorter and the ending continued the story once the women were back, it would have been a great book.
