As the city expanded, so did their selection of restaurants. Art lovers enjoy the atmosphere of the Soho South Café and its Brownie Decadence. Health-conscious diners enjoy the wholesome flavor of the Firefly Café's Southern Comfort Peach Bread Pudding and the Sapphire Grill's Cocoa-infused Crème Caramel. Quaint boardinghouse-style restaurants offer more traditional sweets such as banana pudding. "Perfected" recipes are provided by such well-known chefs and caterers as Paula Deen, Martha Giddens Nesbit, and Susan Mason.
Chapters are divided into cakes & tortes; cobblers, pies, & tarts; custards, puddings, & sauces; ice creams & sorbets; cheesecakes; and candies & cookies. Each inclusion was specifically chosen to offer up the taste of the Savannah lifestyle.

As 'kitchen cook friendly' to prepare as they are palate pleasing,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Savannah Classic Desserts (Classic Recipes Series) (Hardcover)
The American South is famous for its regional cuisine. Beautifully enhanced throughout with the color photography of Deborah Whitlaw Llewellyn, "Savannah Classic Desserts: Recipes From Favorite Restaurants" is an outstanding collection of recipes by Janice Shay (who combines a history lesson on some of the most popular restaurants and cafes in Savannah, Georgia), with signature dishes that superbly reflect the diversity, culinary traditions, and gourmet qualities of the desserts served. These are desserts that are as 'kitchen cook friendly' to prepare as they are palate pleasing and appetite satisfying to consume. Ranging from a Red Velvet Cake (Susan Mason Catering); to a Peach and blackberry Cobbler (North Beach Grill); to Southern Comfort Peach Bread Pudding, with Vanilla Ice Cream & Southern Comfort Creme Anglaise (Firefly Cafe); to Sugar & Spice Pecans (River Street Sweets), "Savannah Classic Deserts" clearly lives up to the promise of its title and is enthusiastically recommended for personal and community library cookbook collections!

This review is from: Savannah Classic Desserts (Classic Recipes Series) (Hardcover)
I got this book as a birthday gift. I am a home baker. I tried the recipe for Coffee Almond Streusel Cake from Gallery Espresso. When I read the instructions, I felt that it was odd that the recipe only called for 15 minutes baking time, and the batter should be covered with foil as well. Never, in my years of baking, I have encountered recipes for cakes that require 15 minutes of baking time!! So I decided to find an online recipe and in all the recipes that I found online it called for at least one hour of baking time. I took it out after one hour and the batter was still goey. I decided to take the foil cover off the pan and put it back in the oven. The cake come out perfectly after another 10 - 15 mins in the oven.
