A Kid's Review
This review is from: Save the Humans (Audio CD)
If you're looking for a good Christian rock CD get this one! You'll be up on your feet dancing to most of them!
Shout: 8/10 Love it! The Solid Rock: 8/10 This one's pretty good, too, but it isn't one of my top three. Magnify: 9/10 Definitely one of the best songs on the entire CD! Save the Humans: 10000000/10 No wonder this one was the title! It's number 1 on my favourites list! You'll be listening to this over and over again! Taboo: 9/10 This song is awesome! Number two on my favs! Into your arms again: 8/10 Don't like it as much as the others, but it's really good! American Idle: American Idle is the "next big thing"! Way to go, Ian! Throw it away: 7/10 This song rocks. You'll love it! Amplified: 10/10 Awesome song once again! I love to tell the story: 9/10 I love to tell how good this is! I highly recommend this to everyone! I'll never stop listening to this one! What are you doing just sitting there? Go buy Ian Esklein's "Save the Humans" today!

Great gospel-rock,

Eskelin has a clear and appealing voice, a sense of humour and memorable songs like the title track, Magnify, Save, Taboo and Amplified. His mostly pop-rock sound also encompasses soulful gospel and even metal. The themes include problems like alienation, arrogance, vanity, denial and animosity against Christians, but Eskelin addresses all of these with wry humour and charming wit. A strong feel of empathy comes through in his music. The lyrics are never preachy, often playful and always entertaining, and they are set to strong tunes. His satire of reality TV in the song American Idle is quite cogent and amusing. My top favorite is Taboo, a more subversive number with impressive rhythms and poetic rhymes. I am not really familiar with gospel rock but Eskelin's music is right up there with the very best of intelligent rock and pop. A similar inspiring album is Where Do We Go From Here? by Pillar. For a more devotional and mystical approach, I recommend the album The Sacred Names by the Hawaiian singer Anjani Thomas.

I stumbled upon All Star United, which Eskelin was lead singer for, a few years ago. I really, really liked their latest 2 or 3 albums, so when I did a search and turned up this album, I listened to a few samples, and was impressed. On this album, Eskelin continues to use his great talents to pump out poppish, driving rock with a strong message, but also produces some fantastic, slower worship pieces that could be sung in church where the worship is on the contemporary side, as well as some reflective tunes containing prayers and wisdom. This is a fantastic mix I am very happy to have purchased! Some of the tunes remind me of my favorite PFR stuff. Listen to the samples; if you like them, I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed with the album purchase. In general, from hearing Eskelin's lyrics, I believe that you will find him to be a man who has learned a LOT about life, faith, and our humanness versus God's holiness, and loads his songs with truths expressed with both a bit of bite, and boatloads of excellence in musical artistry. If you like this album and haven't heard All Star United's last few (I really like "Love and Radiation" and "The Good Album"), check them out, too!

I love this album! I first heard "Magnify" 3 years on MSN radio. And I only just got the album a couple weeks ago. It certainly is not the sort of album with only one great song, and the rest leaving you disappointed. It's so refreshing to listen to, and you just can't get the words and tunes out of your head.
"Magnify" struck me first because I loved the way he modulated from verse to chorus. "Taboo", "Amplified" have wonderful choruses that you can sing forever. "American Idle" has a lovely tune to the verses. And the hymn "I love to tell the story" is a perfect finish. So, "Hey, kids get amplified, cos you just can't hide when it burns inside. I say, 'Hey!'..." Amazing album. |
