Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3–6—For each letter, an eight-line poem introduces a tip for protecting the environment. Lengthy sidebars accompany each verse and provide more detailed information. The book is illustrated with acceptable watercolor paintings. The sidebars are well written, but the poetry is sometimes awkward and occasionally feels forced. The content presents useful advice, though many of the suggestions are aimed at things adults can do, such as composting and improving the insulation in their home, and forgoing items made of ivory or animal skins. However, important information has occasionally been left out. For example, the entry for the letter "B" discusses the uses of compact fluorescent lights. Although the text cautions about handling broken bulbs due to mercury content, it doesn't explain that these bulbs need to be properly recycled. Overall, though, this is an interesting starting point for a class researching a wide range of environmental topics.—Lindsay Cesari, Baldwinsville School District, NY

From Booklist

This alphabet title aims to raise awareness of diverse environmental issues and offer conservation tips. Each letter’s topic is introduced in two rhyming stanzas (“B is for bright idea—/ a bulb that lasts much longer”), while sidebars of small, dense text, geared toward older readers, detail-related information (an overview of compact fluorescent and incandescent lights, for example) and provide context for each issue’s importance. Included throughout are suggestions and practical steps that kids and adults can take to help make a difference. The colorful, realistic illustrations depict children in everyday settings engaged in green activities, such as clearing litter. The rhymes occasionally feel forced, and an index to help guide readers to specific information would have been welcome. Nonetheless, from A (“Appreciation for our planet”) to Z (“zero carbon footprint”), each letter introduces concepts that will inspire thought and action, beyond the familiar Rs of reusing, reducing, and recycling. Web resources are appended. Grades 2-4. --Shelle Rosenfeld

Format: Hardcover
This book is thoughtfully written and beautifully illustrated. It is child-friendly, positive, and easy to understand, and the "ABC" format of suggestions for saving our planet will truly motivate children (and adults!) to make earth-friendly choices. This selection also goes one step further by including additional facts on the importance of each earth saving suggestion. My students will definitely enjoy this one!

This book was recommended to me by a family member. I went out and purchased it right away and I'm glad that I did. What a great book! Not only are the illustrations beautiful but the rhymes and informational content are first rate! I had both my jkids read this book and they were surprised as to how much they learned. We love Brad's books and hope that he keeps on writing them! This is a definite birthday present purchase and a must have for your library!

A Kid's Review on April 26, 2009
Format: Hardcover
S is for Save the Planet is an astounding read for kids aged four through eight. Brad Herzog has created a nice blend of kid-friendly rhymes and environmentally sound knowledge. The illustrations are very realistic and colorful, making the concepts easy to understand.
I would highly recommend this book to other children because I believe it is extremely important for children, at a young age, to learn that we must save the planet.
