Editorial Reviews

Review

"This story isn't a typical sex-filled romp featuring randy alpha males and Buffy clones.

...the relationship works well, mostly because Ms Winters doesn't try to force her characters to conform to typical romance character code of conduct. Instead, the romance flows along its own unorthodox currents, and there is a raw and honest "Yeah, we're both screwed up, that's why we're good together!" vibe to the romance that makes it work." -- Mrs. Giggles Reviews

"Save My Soul is probably my favorite book from Preternaturals Series"  -- Paranormal Muse

"four pitchforks out of five"  -- Succubus.net

From the Author

Save My Soul was actually written before Blood Lust. Originally it was going to be a demon romance series but then it morphed into a larger and more varied world.

I'm more than a little stunned. Not because I didn't expect the book to be so good. I've read Kept, Taken, and Mated. I know Zoe Winters has some mad story-telling skills. Having mad story-telling skills, however, isn't the same as having the skills to make me believe a romance is possible between an Incubus and a human. This is why you should NEVER. EVER. tell a writer what they can and cannot do because they will do it out of spite and it will blow your mind every time. In the hands of a capable writer, anything is possible. Zoe's proving to be much more than a capable writer.

I have only one criticism, and you know? I'm not even really sure it counts as one. I think Zoe's style has matured a lot since Kept, and it shows because for most of the story, this book didn't feel like it was even written for the same universe as the Book 1. Except, it's not supposed to. Totally different setting. And we expect to have other places feel different right? The world of the Preternaturals is expanding, branching out. I can appreciate that, especially when we found out about-but no, that's a spoiler.

I did see the HUGE TWISTY PLOT TWIST, that I also absolutely WON'T be sharing with any of you spoiler-whores, coming but I did so with a gleeful chuckle and lots of evil palm rubbing. It made the whole story come full-circle in a spectacular way, in my humble opinion. So it makes me feel smart when I could say ahead of time "Oooooh! I see what you're doing here."

There were other things that I didn't see coming though. Things that I D'ohed for not even thinking about.

I'm going to warn you though. After reading this book, you're going to wish you had a significant other around. Sufficed to say, Save my Soul reeks of sexual tension, and what a delicious reek it is.

Anna's always been drawn to the house on Cranberry Lane, despite its history. A woman died there, you know. When her life circles back to the place she was born, Anna can't ignore the For Sale sign, especially now that she has the financial means to be its owner.

Right away, unexpected things start happening. Whoever--whatever is in the house is trying to get her attention.

But this is not The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. The "whoever" turns out to be Luc, an incubus, a demon who feeds on sexual energies. He's been trapped by a witch, the previous owner of the house on Cranberry Lane. She said she loved him. They could have been together forever. If only she would have given him her soul.

Now Luc is focused on Anna, and she finds herself as inexorably drawn to the demon as she was to the house. And then more. He says all it would take for happily ever after is her soul. He takes her heart, he's campaigning for her body, can she allow herself to be taken over completely by this...man?

This all sounds like a pretty dramatic story, and that's there. But the true delight comes in the snarky wit of the characters and the sometimes madcap humor with which Winters delivers the tale. Save My Soul brings its otherworldly elements to shimmering life in a way that will delight any fan of the paranormal as Anna turns to gypsies, ghost hunters, and the Holy Catholic Church in her attempts to try to evict the incubus from her home. Before it's too late.

I decided to read Save My Soul after seeing the book trailer on one of my favorite author's (Claudia D. Christian) website. I figured if she liked it and was recommending this book then I might like it too.

In Save My Soul, I received my first introduction to the incubus demon. This was quite an intriguing creature for me since I'm all about the smut. The smuttier the better and reading about a demon that survives off the sexual energy of females seemed really hot!

Anna Worthington has just returned to her childhood town of Golatha Falls, Georgia to settle some affairs from her late father's estate. Not wanting to stay in town for longer than she needs to, Anna starts to head out but decides to take a detour down Cranberry Lane to look at a house that she has been in love with since childhood. The house is for sale and while taking a tour of the house, Anna feels compelled to buy it.

Soon after moving in Anna starts to hear things go bump in the night. It starts out with objects getting moved around, her television being turned on automatically and seemingly stuck on the Food Network channel. She had heard the house was haunted by a ghost named Beatrice and just assumes that is who is haunting her. But then one night during an attempted date rape, Luc appears out of nowhere to defend her against her assailant. To her horror she realizes that she is not being haunted by a harmless old lady but a scary demon.

Luc is an incubus demon who has been trapped in the house ever since a witch named Beatrice cursed him 50 years ago. He and Beatrice had been lovers but Beatrice could not accept Luc's need to feed from other females.

Save My Soul was definitely entertaining, but I felt it fell a little short of my expectations after reading the author's first three novellas. As with those the writing was clear and concise, filled with humor and interesting characters. The tension between Anna and Luc was palpable and I was fully engaged despite the occassional slow pace of the story. There were a few things that I wasn't in love with - mainly the priest and the harem. Their roles felt very sloppy to me and I never fully invested in their contributions to the plot. Finally, the big reveal at the end with Anna's character didn't work for me. It felt like a let down and I was disappointed with it. So, Save My Soul gets a 3.5 star rating from me, but I'll still be reading on to find out what happens in The Catalyst.
