I work as the director of diocesan vocations, helping young men who are discerning the priesthood to find clarity within that call, either yes or no.

Simply, this book is the best resource available for one who is facing the decision of whether God is calling him to the priesthood or not. It is both spiritually uplifting, but also challenging in responding first to the call to holiness and then to the call to the priesthood.

This would make an excellent gift for that young man whom you have seen around the parish and who exhibits those qualities that make for a good priest. Often, he has already thought about it but does not have the information in how to respond. Fr. Brannen outlines the steps of application (which will be somewhat different from diocese to diocese), gives things to pray and reflect over, and steps on how to overcome difficutlties in the response to a vocation.

Simply, this truly is the best resource for one who is discerning the diocesan priesthood.

Fr.Brannen has given a tool that so many young men have prayed for in their discernment. When considering if whether or not God is calling you to the priesthood many men are scared and confused. So many men have prayed "why cant their be a book that just has all the answers!?" To Save a Thousand souls is the answer to that prayer! Fr.Brannen takes a person step by step through what the signs are that you might be called, who to talk to, and even how to tell your friends and family. This book would make an excellent gift to someone discerning or who should be. It would also be a good tool for helping anyone understand what priesthood is and the difficulties of discernment.

To Save a Thousand Souls by Fr. Brennen is a great book with lots of wonderful information for men discerning diocesan priesthood. The book deserves five stars for being one of the very best discernment books in print. On the other hand, it deserves a one or zero star rating because there are some serious flaws and errors contained in the book. That is why I chose a three star rating- it needs to be on everyone's bookshelf and people need to know that there are some serious issues with it and not read it blindly.

The pros need not be spelled out too much. Just look at the Table of Contents. Tons of great stuff. Literally, a LOT of great stuff. Most of the book is amazing and good.

The cons do need some spelling out because theologians and prelates were so eager to get on the praise this vocations book bandwagon that they neglected to critique important areas that deserved such feedback. For instance, Fr. Brennen's theology on chastity/virginity is seriously flawed, and there has been no public statement of retraction nor any hint that this will be rectified in future editions. He writes that virginity has been redefined. This is absolutely not true of the Church's understanding of virginity. As I have mentioned in my extensive review in my website, by his personal redefinition of virginity, Fr. Brennen has effectively made one vocation in the Catholic Church absolutely meaningless- a result I do not think the Church would agree with since it holds that particular vocation in highest esteem.

Second, he glosses over the implications and importance of psychological evaluations done for seminary admissions. Since Fr.

Fr. Brannen has given us a great gift! This book is NOT simply for those who are discerning the priesthood- it is for ALL Catholics! This book has given me great insight to my own vocation; has given me ways to encourage young men and women to the priesthood and religious life, and has given me examples to develop my own children's spiritual life. Fr. Brannen tackles every issue that is imaginable for those discerning the priesthood and the steps toward that decision. He writes clearly, concisely and easy to comprehend. This is a book you can devour in a week end or read one chapter at a time. Well Done Fr. Brannen! May many vocations come from this book!

My impression of a lot of the books out there on vocations has been that they are not much more than propoganda intended to draft men into the priesthood. This book is not like that. It answers all the tough questions with honesty while describing with clarity both the challenges and rewards of priesthood. I highly recommend it!

I bought two copies of this book for two of my grandsons, one who is 14 and the other who is 13. Both are discerning the priesthood, which I also did at their age. I actually read one of the books prior to giving it to my grandson just out of curiosity and discovered it to be quite good as a discernment tool. I wish that this book had been available to me when I was going my discernment process. The book is very informative in many areas, which are broken down into sections for ease of comprehension. I highly recommend getting this book for anyone discerning the priesthood as a vocation as it does answer many question in great detail.

This book is very helpful for those considering the priesthood. I bought it to answer any questions or concern Ihad about discerning a vocation to the priesthood. It certainly answered all my questions and motivated me to take the next step in discernment. Discernment can be difficult and this book will be of great help. I do not think there is a book better than this one. For those discerning the priesthood or even for those that want more information on the priesthood, I highly recommend this book.
