A misleading title providing false hope,
By Noori Pandit (Schaumburg, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Save Your Sight! : Natural Ways to Prevent and Reverse Macular Degeneration (Paperback)
I suffer from Macular Degeneration and bought the book, hoping to find, as the title suggests, a way to reverse the disease. There was no proven cure in the book. Plus, the book has only one chapter on MD, not the whole book as might be construed from the title. Millions of Americans suffer from MD for which there is no definite cure. The title is a good sales booster. People like me who have been told by numerous physicians that there is no cure, will buy the book. If you are a patient of MD, eat a lot of bilberry, antioxidants and lutein( found in leafy greens like spinach) and most of all, pray. God made us and He only can cure; we can only try, it is He that can make it happen.

Nutritional therapy for eye disorders is for real,
By A Customer
This review is from: Save Your Sight! : Natural Ways to Prevent and Reverse Macular Degeneration (Paperback)
Drs. Marc and Michael Rose, Los Angeles ophthalmologists, share the secrets of nutritional therapy they have been offering patients for years. While these doctors provide technically advanced eye care (lasers, lens implants), nutritional therapy takes no back seat here. Macular degeneration doesn't always progress, it can regress, often with the help of a good nutritional regimen. To SAVE YOUR SIGHT, read this book.

I practice Nutritional Optometry (educate my patients on any and all supplements that are beneficial for their particular disease, or family history of disease). This book gives the reader an exceptional overview on the do's and dont's of nutrition as pertaining to the eye.The information contained in this book is necessary info for all eye doctors, so they may relay the info to their patients.

This book should be in every optition's shop,

This review is from: Save Your Sight! : Natural Ways to Prevent and Reverse Macular Degeneration (Paperback)
This book is the best I have found on this dreadful condition - it proves that your eyesight is connected to your general wellbeing. It should be the bible of every Optician and Eye Specialist. It explains why macular degeneration occurs and what you can do about it. It gives one hope after being told 'go away - there is nothing we can do for you. Thank you Doctors

Out of Date,

This review is from: Save Your Sight!: Natural Ways to Prevent and Reverse Macular Degeneration (Kindle Edition)
This book is out of date medically. Since it was published in 1998 there have been many advances in the treatment of Age Related Macular Degeneration. While nutritional support remains the only current treatment for the dry form of the disorder there are several approaches to treatment for the wet form which results in much quicker loss of vision. I have received eye injections of a chemotherapy drug every 6 weeks for 18 months for the wet form with excellent results. The drug stops the growth of new blood vessels under the retina which is what causes much of the damage. Current medical treatment options give significantly more reason to be hopeful that the wet form of the disorder can be successfully managed. New approaches are in the research and development phases. The nutritional information presented by Dr.Rose is relevant to everyone wishing to be as healthy as possible.

Not Real Impressed,
This review is from: Save Your Sight! : Natural Ways to Prevent and Reverse Macular Degeneration (Paperback)
I was doing research on Macular Degeneration as my father has just been diagnosed with it. This is one of 6 books that I purchased on it. Had I been in a bookstore looking through it I probably would not have included it in my purchase. However, if you are in to Natural healing, I guess it would be a worthwhile purchase.

Emphasizes Vitamins and Diet More Than Macular Degeneration,
By A Customer
This review is from: Save Your Sight! : Natural Ways to Prevent and Reverse Macular Degeneration (Paperback)
This book is more about vitamins and diet than a thorough discussion of macular degeneration. Some of the advice is dubious. One page 34 they advise for diet: "...stay away from anything in a box, jar, or can whenever it's possible to do so." This will restrict your diet. On page 13 they advise: "Here's a good rule: If you don't recognize or can't pronounce an ingredient on the label, leave it on the shelf." Does this mean a food might be ok for a highly literate, well spoken scientist, but unhealthful for the rest of us?

I found "Save Your Sight" interesting and easy to read. Macular degeneration is explained in layman's terms and how diet modification may make a significant contribution in slowing or stopping the progress of this disorder. Learning I have MD in the early stages was a wake-up call. Self-management and self-determination are important to me so dietary and other positive lifestyle changes are more appealing than the possibility of invasive procedures which could do more harm than good. Whether diet, exercise, learning to relax, will alter the outcome of my MD remains to be seen (couldn't resist the pun); I think the overall health outcomes will prove the effort a good investment of my time, energy and resources in any event.

snake oil for a vulnerable community,
By A Customer
This review is from: Save Your Sight! : Natural Ways to Prevent and Reverse Macular Degeneration (Paperback)
The theme: that nutrition ought to accompany any medical regime, is sound. But the silly sixties warnings about "processed foods" and other health food myths make one wonder if this is a book designed to make a buck for the authors rather than to help those with vision problems.
