.about time for a band like this to come along.to bad they already broke up!!ohh well.so this is from the ashes from nation of ulysses(the band that was going to destroy america)with the new sound they want to heal your soul.... the 2bands are kind of night and day as far as im concerned, they are a mixture of all the good qualites of good music .a band that streches the sounds of rock music from the last 35 years .its like the british invasion all over again.and why not! so if you still are a true believer in rock youll just listen to it every day for a month and you will be a better person .whether they are a real band or a just a shadow of what we hear .who really cares this is awesome!

A disc that grows on you . . . .,

"You're my Dr. Frankenstein, oh yeah". With lyrics like this, how could you go wrong? Excellent mixing, great production. A brilliant album from a brilliant band not afraid to push the envelope. I'm eagerly awaiting their next release.

Believe.,

Make-Up is not a band. They don't play their instruments. They are a phenomenon. An anomalie. They were an accidental creation of such sheer brilliance, it pains me to describe them at all. See them live. You'll believe.

The best Make Up album next to "I Want Some",
By
This review is from: Save Yourself (Audio CD)
This is their last album. It's well produced and the songs are excellent. "I am pentagon" is sooooo cool it aint even possible to describe it. A friend of mine hated all the other Make Up albums, but he actually owns this one. It is more musicianly music? Maybe more psychedelic than any of the others (my friend is a big 13th Floor Elevators fan)too.I dont know how these guys will hold up historically. They seem very retro in many ways. Not just how the dress and write songs, but even the way they record and produce their records. It's more a true retro replication than a Lenny Kravitz stylized retro chic thang. The gospel element certainly make them all the more bizarre.

SEEK OUT AND FIND THE LIGHT,

This album is obviously not as good as "I want some", their 1999 release. It should be obtained at all costs by you. And while you're doing that you may get this album and begin to appreciate cool music.

Born on the floor,
By A Customer
This review is from: Save Yourself (Audio CD)
Although Save Yourself suffers from a lack of ants-in-pants energy forged by the Make Up's past fake-live recordings, it has the same effect as reading an Introduction to the Make Up textbook at 2.65 bpm (that's "baby's" per minute, as enigmatic frontman Ian Svenonius utters the phrase 95 times in just under 36 minutes). Stripped down its blueprint and sheer songs, this is a band with a means to its madness and a quirky, peddlable sense that enriches its performance art without inhibiting it. Just as the Rolling Stones guided listeners through sexual tours of neglect, social class and racism, the Make Up's libidous grooves use tracks such as "The Prophet," "C'mon, Let's Spawn" and "I am Pentagon" to extend fornication's boundaries into religion, childbirth and, yes, even high school arithmetic.

Pretty good,

this Cd is pretty good. Not as good as their other Cd's, but very soulful and fun, and intelligent. If you like this album, i suggest you check out maybe Jon Spencer, The Strokes, or The Statue Factor.

Inspiring,

Few people realize that this band was the inspiration for Mike Meyer's "Austin Powers: The spy who shagged me". THe gospel speaks, and it tells us that purple velvet flared trousers & a greasy pompadour are an adequate substitute for talent. The make up are an inspiration for us all.

Who stole the soul?,

The Make-up are lame; if you want soul music then buy a James Carr record. If you want gospel, then buy a Staple Singers record; if you want rock n' roll then buy the Pretty Things or the Monks, or hell even the Minutemen or the Big Boys. But this kind of tripe, man, this junk is for boys and girls who spend too much time in the mirror and read the back of the book instead of finishing the story...totally lame. |
