SaveMii is a small dongle that is plugged into a Wii's Gamecube memory card slot. It mimicks a test interface that is believed to be used in Nintendo's own facilities (dubbed Waikiki by Nintendo). When the System Menu is started and such a device is found, much of the System Menu's code is skipped. Instead, the System Menu checks the validity of the disk, runs an update from the inserted disk if present, and then tries to start a diagnostic  also known autoboot  disk. This will allow updates from legit Wii disks to fix the system data. Or, if the Wii's system hasn't been updated to version 3.3 yet and is equipped with a modchip, even run custom-made disks containing updates or homebrew tools to modify the system.

My first Wii was bricked a long time ago with a V2.X PAL update. The V2.X updates behave different from the newer V3.X. The SaveMii works perfectly with a 3.X brick (you'll know if the update is newer when you insert the SaveMii, it will display the version in the bottom right corner) if the update is 2.X it will display a black screen.

You can still use the SaveMii for the 2.X brick, but you'll need a modchip installed and an autoboot dvd with a newer version of an update.
You'll have to download the wii system menu update .iso file with a newer version, like 289 or 290, google it to find it. Make the iso file autoboot with a tool named "Wii_BootMe.rar". Once you completed that, burn the iso file in a DVD-R with an image recorder program.

Turn on the Wii with the SaveMii in, insert the burned dvd, wait a few seconds and the new version update number will appear on the bottom right corner of the screen.

There are plenty of forums in the net where you can ask for further help, especially in the part of making the iso file bootable (I myself needed the help from a friend so I can't explain it right now), but overall, if you buy the SaveMii and get the black screen don't worry, there's still a solution.

I honestly thought my Wii was going directly to the trash, but SaveMii saved the day.
