A Great Memory of the 80's,
This review is from: Saved By the Bell - Hawaiian Style [VHS] (VHS Tape)
(...)This movie to me was better than any of the episodes. Each person in the movie had their own little story going that all connected together in some way. The gang travels to Hawaii to get away from their "hard life" and visit Kelly's grandfather, only to discover that Mr. Belding, their principal, is there too, hosting a tour group of fellow principals. Well, Kelly's grandfather happens to own an un-occupied hotel, that has been threatened to be torn down to make way for an expansion of a HUGE hotel. The gang decides to get Belding's group from the fancy hotel to Kelly's grandfather's hotel (who happens to be Dean Jones..yes the one from all those Disney movies). They go through many attempts and "Zack" plans and eventually get the group to the hotel. But there is no service, so the gang all have to become the cooks, maids, hula instructors, and tour guides. Oh, did I mention in all this that the native Hawaiian's think Screech is a GOD???? Yep that's right. It seems nothing can go right when Zack and Screech get stranded in a boat with no gas and full of tourists, Slater and Jesse get a bus full of tourists stuck in the mud, and Screech loses the pig that is supposed to be used for the luau. Romances fly with Kelly falling for her grandfather's lawyer, and Zack falling for an older Hawaiian who has a child. It is a cute story that isn't intended to be taken seriously, just something to remind you of the 80's and what a great cast the OLD Saved By The Bell was. (...)

"WOW!" That's all I have to say about "SBTB: doin'it Hawaiian Style." I appreciated the fact that all of the original actors from the series showed up for the production of this movie (post hiatus). You won't find any snobby highbrow actors boycotting the reunion episodes here! And I like that. Real salt-of-the-earth types, you know? As usual, this SBTB episode-extraordinaire tackles controversial and politically-charged material, balanced with madcap slapstick hilarity provided by Screech (Dustin Diamond). This movie, however delivers something a little extra to give back to the audience: a cameo by one of the greatest performance artists of our time, Gallagher. Try as you might, you will NEVER see such beautiful sweeping views of Hawaiian's Tropical landscape as those seen in this film. My cat loves it as well. Don't waste your money on one of those over-priced fish aquarium videos for you four-footed friends, when you can get a ... movie for the same price! I've got to hand it to director Gary Shimowawa, he's making real leaps and bounds, cinematically-speaking. Soon you will see his name displayed proudly alongside other Japanese greats such as Kurosawa and Ozu.

This is the best movie in the history of the world. If you want to watch an actor perfect his craft you could no better than Saved by the Bell--Hawaiian Style. Dustin Diamond can do no wrong.

Vomitous '80's dreck,

A lot of very bad things came out of the 1980's. Musically, for instance, the '80's were a wasteland of synth drenched slop and bombastic hair metal. However, there were few cultural phenomena during the whole of that decade which reached the level of sheer amaturish awfulness that Saved By the Bell did on a regular basis. To call this series dated would be an understatement. It is pure, yuppie infested, politically correct, soulless, trendy, garbage. I remember watching this series on TV as a 8 year old and thinking to myself how utterly boring and unfunny it was. Why is it so awful? Well, for starters every single character is a hollow stereotype. Zack is the "preppy kid", Slater is the "jock", Screech is the "geek", and all the female characters who are nearly impossible to destinguish from one another are "chicks" (in the case of this particular episode, add in some offensive ethnic caricatures of Hawaiian village people and a sleazy lawyer who lusts after teenage girls). The dialogue sounds as though it was written by a bunch of 5 year olds trying to impersonate highschool kids. Worst of all is the obvious use of cheap film stocks to cover for the show's nonexistant budget which was probably spent just getting to Hawaii. I still wonder from time to time how this show managed to stay on the air, and overlong episodes like this will put even a dedicated fan's endurance to the test. Do yourself a favor. Pass Saved By the Bell-Hawaiian Style over and use you money to buy something, ANYTHING more enjoyable.
