1.0 out of 5 stars Truly Disappointing
I am amazed at the people who raved about this cookbook because as a cookbook, it's a dismal failure. The recipes are contrived and uninteresting. Virtually none of the recipes herein captured my imagination and I'm a pretty adventurous cook. As a picturebook it's great though. My advice would be to leave it on the coffee table where it belongs. If anyone really...

5.0 out of 5 stars Doubles as a coffee table book!, July 9, 1999

The pictures and interesting stories make this cookbook not only a delightful addition to my cookbook collection, but also makes a very interesting coffee table book. As a long time subscriber of Saveur, I was thrilled to find all my favorite recipes from the magazine. The magazine and this fine cookbook can be described as the "national geographic" for foodies. I've made several of the recipes and have loved everyone. The barbequed ribs were perfect for July 4th, and the recipe for "Monte's Ham" is the best I've ever made (and easy!).

5.0 out of 5 stars As good to eat as it is to look at!, October 2, 2001

Hearing an interview with the authors, I bought this for a friends who love to cook and peeking at it before wrapping it up, I went back to Amazon and got another for myself and my wife.

We have made about half the dishes and every one has been spectacular. Our friends said it is their favorite cookbook as well. (We sent the Saveur Cooks French the next year).

This is a coffee table quality book. Oversized with photos that make you drool! Nothing is overly complicated either nor is it too spicy. Among our favorites - the Macroni and Cheese.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wealth of information on American cooking, June 19, 2000
This review is from: Saveur Cooks Authentic American: Celibrating the Recipes and Diverse Traditions of Our Rich Heritage (Hardcover)
Rich in pictures and in facts, "Saveur Cooks..." is a wealth of information on American cooking. Over 150 detailed recipes ranging from salads and soups to desserts and cocktails draw out a culinary map from sea to shining sea. It's lush pictures throughout the book make the cookbook worth browsing through over and over again.

The pictures are drool-inducing and inspire you to become more interested in the recipes. Recipe instructions are simple and easy to follow along with and the little tidbits of information scattered throughout the book are really interesting and lend a readable tone to the book.

Make sure you try the recipe for Bierocks. It's excellent!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great American Cooking, December 18, 2001

This review is from: Saveur Cooks Authentic American: Celibrating the Recipes and Diverse Traditions of Our Rich Heritage (Hardcover)
This book has a wonderful diversity of recipes, all fairly easy to prepare with ingredients that are easy to get. It's certainly attractive enough for a coffee table book, and the pictures are enough to get anyone's appetite going. Because of the recipes, though, it lives in my kitchen, and more than one page has got stains on it from use. I recommend the macaroni and cheese!

This is the best fried chicken recipe I have ever found. And I am from South Carolina, so I should know good fried chicken! I read this cookbook for fun, as the anecdotes along the side are so interesting and the pictures so mouthwatering. I highly recommend this cookbook to moderately advance cooks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and interesting cookbook., February 13, 1999
This review is from: Saveur Cooks Authentic American: Celibrating the Recipes and Diverse Traditions of Our Rich Heritage (Hardcover)
This cookbook is made special by the use of wonderful pictures and interesting stories that accompany the recipes. My grandmother's recipe for chicken pie has been included and I can tell you it is fabulous. Aline showed me how to make the pies in my Grandmother's kitchen. Likewise, the other recipes give the reader a wonderful feeling for the diversity of favorite foods across America. This is truly a beautiful and interesting cookbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Macaroni and Cheese, October 23, 2006

I've recommended this cookbook repeatedly and bought it for others as gifts. It has THE best recipe for Macaroni and Cheese. Friends request this dish out of the blue and we end up having mac and cheese dinner nights. This has been the most asked for recipe. The ribs in this book are amazing- flavorful and spicey. The fried chicken is also to die for. You won't be sorry. Everyone will be raving over the dishes you prepare.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true culinary adventure across the United States!, September 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Saveur Cooks Authentic American: Celibrating the Recipes and Diverse Traditions of Our Rich Heritage (Hardcover)
Twillard Mayweather's Barbequed Ribs (pg. 174) are absolutely incredible...worth every minute that it takes to prepare them. The Hazelnut Brownies (pg. 287) are decadent. Even if you are a novice cook, the photography alone should be able to convince you to give each recipe a try!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pucker up!, October 24, 2007
This review is from: Saveur Cooks Authentic American: Celibrating the Recipes and Diverse Traditions of Our Rich Heritage (Hardcover)
All of the Saveur cookbooks are beyond just good cookbooks. I have all of them and I would hate to part with any of them. They all have a vast collection of basic and/or not so basic recipes that you'd imagine any type of person cooking, from a peasant to a pro at an expensive restaurant. Each recipe has a picture, which I personally really like, and side notes explaining something more about the recipe.
Excellent cookbooks, whether you're considering the Italian, French or American one, all are highly recommended.
