5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful mix of recipes August 3, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
All of the recipes we have tried have been wonderful. First off, the book is beautiful. Each recipe is accompanied with a full color, full page picture of the finished product. The contents cross numerous ethnic cuisines and stays true to it's title of "comfort food". While there are many familiar recipes you think of as american comfort food it has some that will allow you to stretch beyond our borders and try something new.

The Chicken Tikka Masala was the first recipe I made from the book. It got the thumbs up from the family in the "would you want me to cook this again" category. I hate to say it but my tried and true BH&G recipe for Chicken Paprikash has been sidelined for the one in this book. Having a number mediterrenean cookbooks I have not been able to find a Hummus recipe that I cared for, the one in this book is so simple and delicious, I have finally found one. Other recipes we have tried ... Mushroom & Herb Crostini is simple and refreshing ... the Italian-Style Meatballs with Tomato Ragu, while a bit more intensive on the preperation side, was another crowd pleaser.

I have many cookbooks but can't say I have one that I go back to time and again to find something new to prepare. I'll pull some meat or poultry out of the freezer and then grab this book to see what I can make with it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Taking comfort food to the next level July 4, 2011
Saveur presents their take on comfort food - from around the world. Most recipes have pictures and there are very instructive sidebars which give information such as; know your artichokes, clam varieties with pictures, legumes, butter, kimchi, perfect poaching.

Recipes included are; snacks, starters and salads, soups and stews, eggs, pasta and noodles, fish and shellfish, poultry, meat, vegetables and sides, baked goods and sweets, drinks, with especially interesting variations and region drinks - like 6 Texas cocktails and 6 regional Bloody Marys.
Family favorites have been matzo brei with mushrooms and asparagus, pork loin stuffed with prosciutto and broiled salmon steaks with tomatoes, onions and tarragon.

It is not an all encompassing book, but one that will give some different recipes than one might normally serve. This book is not necessarily for the beginning cooks, however the recipes are not that difficult or complicated and with the help given in the sidebars a beginning determined cook could learn a lot. It would be a good addition to a cookbook collection or for those who wish to take their comfort food up to the next level.

5.0 out of 5 stars YUMMY, YUM, YUM October 17, 2011

I love cooking and I'm so glad I added this book to my library. Talk about mouthwatering. The first recipe, The Ultimate Grilled Cheese Sandwich, was so absolutely easy, but what made it different for me because I've never used anything but cheddar for a grilled cheese, was this one called for grated comte cheese and recommended Jarlsberg, Fontina or Gruyere as a sub. I love gruyere and never tried it on a grilled cheese sammy. I ran to DiBruno Brothers day one of receiving the book. Unfortunately, they didn't have comte, so I got my fav Gruyere, no more cheddar for my GCS, its strickly gruyere on sourdough for now on. My husband begs me on weekends to make this sandwich. Another recipe is the Herbed Tomato Tart, YUP easy, quick and absolutely delicious recipe. A new fav for me is the Tuscan-Style Kale Soup, goes great with The Ultimate Grilled Cheese sammy. Then there's the Mac and Cheese with Ham (eyes rolling back in my head delicious). This book has every Ethnic groups favorite comfort food. Indonesian Chicken Curry was so easy I've made it twice since I got this book. Sweet and Spicy Korean Fried Chicken is my sister's favorite. This book takes you around the world to experience delicious easy recipes. Tons of pictures too, easy to follow instructions, I"M SO NOT DISAPPOINTED. Other recipes I've tried: Patty Melt, Roast Pork Loin, and the cover shot, Potatoes Gratin, I used fingerling potatoes from Whole Foods. They even take you through A World of Butter. My husband already picked Thanksgiving dessert (our standard Sweet Potato Poone will have company with the Dulce de Leche Cake with Spiced Wine), he wrote out the menu already - I love him and I love this book. Spain, Thailand, Korea, Italy, France, and the good ole USA, comfort food is where its at and this book is definitely a keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the Greatest Book! January 26, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I'm not kidding. I've had it a few months and I'm wearing it out. Literally. The recipes are so make-able. I've tried a bigger percentage of the recipes in this book than maybe any of the other 154 cookbooks I have. Some recipes are just a few sentences long. But, all that I've tried have come across with some impact. Simple yet different. I love Saveur magazine and this book represents the same ideas. Super diverse. Not just creamy Southern food. It's food from all around the world. Great photos, too. My favorite book of the year. I'd give it to the experienced cook or the novice. It's that kind of book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Saveur September 11, 2011

I love Saveur magazine. It has quickly surpassed all other food magazines and become my favorite with it's thoughtful, accessible, beautifully photographed articles with excellent quality writing and recipes. The same holds true for Saveur's cookbooks! I was drawn to this book due to fact that it contained recipes for comfort food from all around the world. I admit to being a cookbook addict and I enjoy reading them like literature, but very seldom do I use the recipes. That is not the case with this book. I received this book last week and I've already made 5 of the recipes and have marked at least 60 more that I plan on making. The Italian Stuffed Artichokes were particularly easy and delicious. If you're hungry for any type of comfort food from around the world, you're sure to find a recipe to satisfy your cravings in this book.
