This is another great book by Lori Wilde. Allegheny Green, is a take charge kind of woman, who spends all her time taking care of her zany family. 3.0 out of 5 stars Good overall story but....
the ending was too abrupt--the alternate ending was not any better. I am a fan of this author but she really needs to put more time into the final chapter after writing such an interesting read. She must have gotten bored towards the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars A winner, September 8, 2005
This review is from: Saving Allegheny Green (Signature Select) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is another great book by Lori Wilde. Allegheny Green, is a take charge kind of woman, who spends all her time taking care of her zany family. When something goes amok it is Allegheny who must take care of things, putting her own life and dreams on hold. When her sister shoots her boyfriend in the foot, after finding he is married, things start to really spiral out of control. Enter the local sheriff, Sam Conahegg, and the sexual tension between the two is evident. When Allegheny gets involved in the darker side of life there is only Sam to protect her. This story has a little bit of everything - murder, drugs, crazy relatives, mahem, and the underlying fact that maybe dreams can come true. This is a book that will keep your interest and have you reading until you can find out the solution to the mystery, which is shocking. For a story that has a something for everyone, I feel that Lori has once again given us a winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saving Allegheny...a Novel to Savor, November 24, 2005
By

This review is from: Saving Allegheny Green (Signature Select) (Mass Market Paperback)
Lori Wilde is fast becoming one of my favorite authors, and one of the few that I actually rush out to the bookstore to find when I hear they have a new novel.

Not only are her novels fun -- combining all the elements I enjoy in a story like romance, adventure, humor, a light mystery, quirky characters and lots of heat and sexual tension! -- she has a really great style and voice so reading her books is a pleasure.

What surprised me the most about Saving Allegheny was that it was written in first person. I know someone commented in the reviews below that first person doesn't work well for this genre, but I have to disagree...which surprises me because I normally loathe first person novels. Loathe them. In fact, I've been known to open a book in the store, see the "I" voice going on in the story and immediately put it back on the shelf and move on. I find first person perspective in books annoying, repetitive, and usually so distracting it takes me out of the story and makes me aware of the actual writing. Never a good thing.

But with Saving Allegheny I didn't notice anything at all. I was pulled into the story and involved in the character's lives, and the next thing I knew, I was done with the book.

Buyers should note that, while Saving Allegheny is a romance, it's more along the lines of a chick lit book, so the focus is more on the heroine and her life while the romance between Allegheny and the local sheriff, Sam Conahegg, is what prompts Allegheny to start making changes in her life. And she definitely needs to start making changes.

Her life is overrun and controlled by her sense of responsibility to her family and always putting their needs above her own. For anyone who has ever been in this position with loved ones, it's a hard dance to break (even scary) and Wilde handles the issue well. I sympathized with Allegheny as she was torn between what she wants in her life (love, romance, Sam) and her duty, honor and loyalty to her family.

Allegheny is a smart woman, something I always look for in a story, and Sam is a terrific counterpoint to her character. He's the "been there/done that" type who has been in Allegheny's shoes and knows exactly what she has to face, accept and change before their relationship can move forward.

Saving Allegheny is more than "just a romance". The mystery is well built, the relationship issues timely, the character studies on target, and yet Lori Wilde handles it all with her normal flare for fun, adventure, and humor, making you laugh even in the heavier parts of the story.

I was really surprised by the other review calling this book "crass" and "crude" and lacking "morals" because, if anything, I felt a strong connection with her main characters and the fine line they were trying to walk between doing what was expected of them and what others wanted and what they longed for in their life.

This was an unexpected gem in Lori Wilde's long list of works and I'm eagerly anticipating her next!

4.0 out of 5 stars Charming romance-mystery, September 19, 2007
By
This review is from: Saving Allegheny Green (Signature Select) (Mass Market Paperback)
All her life, Allegheny Green has taken care of her family. She's the only sane one in a bunch of eccentric characters. When she discovers two deaths involving her jerk-magnet sister Sissy, she dons her Nancy Drew cap to prove Sissy's innocence, while fighting her lust for new sexy sheriff Sam Conahegg. Suddenly she has to balance her own needs with the needs of her very needy family.

Wilde, who is know for her racy romances, has created a charming lighthearted and humorous romance with just a touch of spice. She goes into new unfamiliar territory by writing it in first person, which provides more insight into Allie's need to keep watch over her helpless family. It's one of my favorite Wilde novels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ally Green, Heroine Extraordinare! (B Grade), June 21, 2007
This review is from: Saving Allegheny Green (Signature Select) (Mass Market Paperback)
Lori Wilde has written a nice, light mystery romance with a heroine who is so caring to the point she doesn't think for herself. You feel for Ally as she goes through constant drama with her kooky aunt and mother as well as a younger sister who involves herself with abusive, drug addicted jerks. Ally is the only woman in this family with her head on straight.
But then one night little sister shoots her loser boyfriend in the foot. But things aren't that bad as the lust of Ally's dreams, Sheriff Conahegg is on the case. From that moment on Ally's life becomes even crazier with murder, out of control neighbors and the man she wants who keeps giving her mixed signals.
Ally has a back bone but is afraid to go after the best things in life, which means our hunky sheriff. Will Ally let loose, or will her sister and family bring her down?
Oh, and Ally finds herself becoming an amateur sleuth when her sister maybe up for murder charges.
Some may think this is more a popcorn read, but overall and enjoyable way to spend a few hours. The romance is sweet and Ally's internal thoughts are cute.

This review is from: Saving Allegheny Green (Signature Select) (Mass Market Paperback)
`Saving Allegheny Green' by Lori Wilde is a quirky mystery romance novel. Allegheny `Ally' Green lives with her crazy family and works two jobs as a nurse. She has her first run in with handsome local police chief after her sister shoots her boyfriend. Ally ends up trying to solve a mystery, quench her overactive erotic thoughts of the police chief and find some freedom from her family. I plan to check out this author's past novels - what a notable find. Check out this author's web site [...]

4.0 out of 5 stars Murders Shake Up Allegheny's Dull Life, November 26, 2006
This review is from: Saving Allegheny Green (Signature Select) (Mass Market Paperback)
The cover graphics make it look like a teen novel, but it isn't. The back cover says "Move over Miss Marple," but again, it's not a cosy mystery.
Overly responsible Allie Green tries to mother her wild sister, their flakey mother and fortune-telling aunt. She's tempted to fling herself into a romance with the sexy sheriff, but somehow they end up at odds most of the time.
The mystery involves several suicides, or murders that seem to revolve around her sister. It's not a standard steamy romance, nor is it a routine crime solver, but is a blend of those two. Some colorful characters add to the books flavor.
Some bonus features include an alternate ending (I liked the original ending best) and an author interview.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bright, funny, and mysterious, August 9, 2006

This book is a kick. Smart contemporary dialogue, characters I hated to leave behind at the end of the book. It was on of the few mysteries I didn't guess the ending of ahead of time. Then again, I was distracted by Ally and the sheriff's antics. A wonderful message about "dependency," too. It was so much fun to read, I wish there were a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally awesome, November 11, 2005
This review is from: Saving Allegheny Green (Signature Select) (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved this book. It is so different from most of the stuff out there. Loved the mystery---the ending is how you expect it to be but much bettre, loved the romance and the chemistry between Sam and Ally. And the secondary characters, what a hoot. Wilde is an excellent writer who really knows how to pull a reader into a story.
