Book Description

This is a superb guide to the prevention of childhood injury--concise, carefully organized, clearly written, authoritative and realistic. It adopts a developmental approach to understanding the causes of injury and planning intervention, whether in infants, toddlers, preschoolers, elementary school children or young adolescents. Detailed information on specific injury is presented under an environmental rubric: the roadway, the home, the school and recreational area. Each chapter summarizes facts about the specific type of injury being considered, discusses developmental issues that affect its occurrence, and then offers guidelines for prevention. Both unintentional and intentional injuries are covered. The authors' recommendations are addressed to schools and child care centers; health care providers; public agencies; legislators and regulators; law enforcement professionals; voluntary organizations; designers, architects, builders and engineers; business and industry; and mass media. Children cannot be expected to avoid injury on their own. Adults must grant them freedom from injury by providing a safe environment.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Clearly written and should be useful for those who are new to the field as well as those who have been involved in the prevention of childhood injury for some time. The authors have put together a concise but thorough reference which is easy to use and quite versatile. The book should have a wide readership, and not be limited to those in the healthcare field. It will be valuable to all those who work with children and are interested in decreasing the toll of childhood injury." --Newsletter of the American Trauma Society

"Offers practical advice not just to parents, but to decision makers. . . .Readers will find a clearly presented list of practical prevention strategies." --Johns Hopkins Children's Center News

"This detailed resource book, written by authorities in medicine, public health, and child development, is a handy reference to injury prevention for infants through adolescents." --Choice

"Very much a guide and a resource that is easy to read and easy to reference. It is as useful to the novice in injury prevention as it is to the veteran. . . .An authoritative source. . . .Another milestone in the field of injury prevention." --Childhood Injury Prevention Quarterly

"Particularly notable because it integrates discussion of unintentional and inflicted injuries (assault and suicide) much more thoroughly than the childhood injury literature has done heretofore. Several chapters . . . are the clearest concise summaries I have seen of their respective topics. This unique book is sure to become a landmark in the history if injury control. . . . at once so concise and broad reaching. Readers can expect to use and share this wonderul book as it is, can offer congratulations to its authors, and can eagerly anticipate the inevitable sequel." --Katherine K. Christoffel, Northwestern University Medical School, Accident Analysis and Prevention
