Book Description

Multi-awardwinning, Bestselling Romantic Mystery Series

Saving Grace kicks the Katie & Annalise series off with voodoo, laughs, and suspense.

Katie Connell is a high-strung attorney whose sloppy drinking habits and stunted love life collide hilariously during a doomed celebrity case in Dallas. She flees Texas for the Caribbean and escapes professional humiliation, a broken heart, and a wicked Bloody Mary habit, but ends up trading one set of problems for another when she begins to investigate the suspicious deaths of her parents on the island of St. Marcos. She’s bewitched by the voodoo spirit of an abandoned house in the rainforest and discovers that she’s as much a danger to herself as the island’s bad guys are.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unputdownable! September 26, 2012
Format:Paperback
Saving Grace is remarkable debut novel. It is everything a good read should be, with an exotic setting, vivid characterization (including jumbies), authentic-sounding dialogue, and real emotion, all balanced with page-turning doses of action and suspense. Fun, witty, exciting, and unputdownable!

I couldn't put the book down! I loved the main character Katie!
She is truly a character I have fallen for! I haven't loved another character this much since Stephanie Plum.
Can't wait for more from this talented author! This novel has it all - mystery, attraction, excitement, humor, heartfelt situations, friendship and even a ghost! A++++++
This book is now on my favorites list!

3.0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone December 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book has a little of everything: mystery, murder, friendship, island culture, a ghost, and love. The thread that runs through the whole story is alcoholism. I almost stopped reading about halfway through because of the obsessive, self destructive main character. I did finish it, and the second half got better. It was okay but not great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Could not put it down! May 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Oh, my goodness! This is one of those books that has characters I would love to meet in person. The author has done a great job with the character development. I would love to be like Katie and just shuck my regular job and move to an island -- not sure I would be as brave as she and buy a haunted house, but it is a fantasy worth striving for.
So glad there are more books in the series coming because I want to know more. Can't wait for the next ones to come out. This is also a very well-edited book. So many books, especially those I read on Kindle, are full of typos and proofing errors that are disruptive when reading. This book didn't have those, so kudos to the author and her editors for that.
Will make a great pool or beach book this summer.

5.0 out of 5 stars I want to move to St. Marcos! September 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
After a bit of a slow beginning (chapter or two), the book took off and I didn't put it down until I finished it - all in the same day. I love the island knowledge the author shares and the characters are full-bodied to the point you think you know them personally! I love how the heroine is not perfect; her foibles are like anyone elses, making her easy to identify with in many ways. The house, the lush island feel, the food, drinks - all suck you in and make you wish you were sitting under an umbrella on the island, reading this book! I loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a treat! June 30, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Authored by a skilled writer who put effort into developing a plot that flowed smoothly as well as deeply. Worth more than 5 stars because she did it without resorting to endless explicit sex scenes which, in my opinion, detract and disrupt rather than add anything of value. k

This is one of those books you just don't want to put down and are sad when it comes to an end! I can't wait to meet up with Katie and the St. Marcos gang in the next book... there better be a next book! :D Alternately funny and suspenseful, this book has it all covered - great characters, beautiful scenery, and jumbies!

3.0 out of 5 stars This novel is crowded with story lines. February 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I really wanted to like this book more. But the fact is that this book is all over the place. This novel is crowded with story lines.

Hutchins' writing style is quirky, at times so full of idioms that I found myself having to stop and look for definitions. The main character, Katie, doesn't really have that many redeeming qualities making it hard at times to really care about what she is going to do next. Hutchins does have a talent for imagery and world building making it easy to feel transported to St. Marcos.

The "love story" between Katie and her crush Nick is little more than a one sided obsession on Katie's part. Later in the book, Katie has another chance at love but it feels overly cautious compared to the impulsive Katie we've gotten to know up to this point. Katie's growing drinking habit takes up a lot of the book but it is a little light weight in my opinion. The one story line that I thought had the most promise is the one that was practically ignored in the book - the death of Katie's parents.

Katie's parents are killed in a car crash while on vacation in St. Marcos. Katie, the super star lawyer, waits over a year to investigate this horrible incident. This story line ends rather disappointingly. No big crime is discovered and the story of the car crash is anti-climactic and dull. I'm really not sure how this story line helped the overall novel except to get Katie to St. Marcos.

Before long, Katie is involved in several simultaneous sub plots but none of them are fully developed. One moment Grace is defending an high profile alleged rapist and the next she is rooming with a woman she just met in St. Marcos. Then she is trying to solve another murder while renovating a ruined half built mansion she acquires while on detox.
