5.0 out of 5 stars A funny, sweet, coming-of-age story.
Saving Sailor by Renée Riva takes the reader to Indian Lake, Idaho 1968 where A.J. Degulio and her family spend every summer. A.J. loves hanging out in the canoe with Sailor, her dog, and drifting. She torments her family by speaking in a Southern accent, even though she's Italian.

3.0 out of 5 stars This is character driven, not plot driven..
I'm generally a plot reader and while the storyline is good - there is no plot.

I really enjoyed A.J.'s thoughts on God. He's a huge part of her life and makes it clear to everyone where they stand. She's also very honest - wondering, like a 10 year old does - what exactly she is to repent for and when it's not really a sin.

5.0 out of 5 stars A funny, sweet, coming-of-age story., October 12, 2008
This review is from: Saving Sailor: A Novel (Paperback)
Saving Sailor by Renée Riva takes the reader to Indian Lake, Idaho 1968 where A.J. Degulio and her family spend every summer. A.J. loves hanging out in the canoe with Sailor, her dog, and drifting. She torments her family by speaking in a Southern accent, even though she's Italian.

Another family is spending the summer at the lake and A.J. meets her soul mate, Danny Morgan, who shares her love of star-gazing and God. But Danny's family is falling apart. His father's had an affair and Danny just knows his mom will forgive him again. A tragedy causes everyone to look at how precious life is and consider that God can change even the hardest hearts when forgiveness is offered.

Saving Sailor is a wonderful story about a girl just loving life. A.J. is funny and smart and I enjoyed her hysterical moments in catechism classes and her mother's impersonating Sophia Lauren and giving autographs to the public. What a funny, sweet, and heartwarming story.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting - We Need More Books Like This One..., July 1, 2008
By
VRWC (San Diego, CA.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Saving Sailor: A Novel (Paperback)
This is the most enjoyable, happy, comforting novel I've read since I was young. A far cry from most books written today that are either about dysfunctional relationships, shallow mean-spirited friendships, or just general self-absorption. The characters are well developed and the humor is lovely. I adored the mom, Sophia, whose positive outlook is a real treat. I plan on having my 11 year-old read it as well. I hope there are many more stories coming from Ms. Riva...

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Sailor, June 4, 2007
This review is from: Saving Sailor: A Novel (Paperback)
I loved this book. It was cleverly written with humor and lots of heart. I loved AJ and the story took me back to my own sweet childhood summers. It is a must read for those who love summer, driftin' on a lake and sharing all that is good in the world with your dog and crazy family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thanks, Renee!, August 5, 2007
This review is from: Saving Sailor: A Novel (Paperback)
Delightful. Poignant. God bless the day a stranger stopped by our "summer palace" as she called it, and left a copy of her book as a thank you! Thank YOU Renee! I'll be passing this book along to my loved ones!

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute, Funny Book, March 22, 2010

I was pleasantly surprised when I read "Saving Sailor." It was one of those "hey, it's free, I'll try it." I have to admit I chuckled out loud several times, which is not something I normally do. Maybe being the 5th of 6 children really made this enjoyable. I was reliving all those "fun" times fighting with my younger brother and watching my older sisters roll their eyes at me. This was just a real nice story - full of laughter and tears.

5.0 out of 5 stars An All-Around Great Book, March 20, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Saving Sailor is a heartwarming novel that will delight anyone. It's about a young girl whose love is animals. Her quirky family goes to an island for the summer where she accuires all kinds of unforgettable memories she faces with her rescue dog, Sailor. This book will make you laugh out loud but it is easy to relate to the main character, A.J. I am 13 and read this novel very quickly. It's an easy read but it doesn't lack quality. All in all a great book and a must read. Plus, when I downloaded it to my Kindle, it was free!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hysterical coming of age story with good values incorporated, March 17, 2010

I have to honestly say when reading this book I laughed so many times I could not believe. I thought it was an endearing story with so much spunk. A.J. was such a innocent heartwarming character and see life through her eyes was not only refreshing but comical. Enjoyed thoroughly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saving Sailor, March 22, 2010
I have to admit that half way through I had no idea what this book was about, until I realized it was about life at 10 years of age. Every girl has a piece of A.J. in her and we can all relate on some level. I truly enjoyeds Saving Sailor and will read more of Renee Riva's books.

I laughed so hard I cried! It was sweet, heart-warming, and a good way to tell Biblical truths all at the same time.
