5.0 out of 5 stars Grading McKenzie's Saving Sara Cain, January 25, 2008

This review is from: Saving Sarah Cain (Audio CD)
I have been affected in a positve way by this composer and believe you cannot expect to listen to a Mark Mckenzie Score and not be affected in the same way by its emotional pull or tug at your heart.

This is the seventh score I have reviewed of his and all seven are exquisite in their orchesration but even more so in their melodic content. McKenzie gets his hook into a score as soon as he knows what the story is and never lets us forget what he has for us expressing exactly his interpretation of the story with his music - his heart to ours. His creativity in this aspect of any score I have heard of his are unparalleled among his peers.

Among his work, his score for "The Blizzard" is brilliant,(not easy to come by), but if you can get it, well worth the money,"The Last Sin Eater", "In From the Night" which is on the same disc as "Silver Bells" both Hallmark made for television movies, "Durango", "The Lost Child", (expensive but again worth the purchase if you can find it), and his latest CD released on January 15, 2008, Saving Sarah Cain.

The composer usually works with large orchestras but this score is produced buy some of the musicians of the Los Angeles Studio Orchestra. In the liner notes there are thirty one strings, encompassing violins, cellos, volas and basses, a smaller ensemble than usual but their music is quite amazing.

Most of the works of McKenzie I have reviewed are melodic and "Saving Sarah Cain" is another beautiful, listening experience. This is a story about an Amish family torn apart by their mother's death and Sarah arriving at her sister's funeral suddnely wondering about herself now the legal guardian of her sister's five children. This is also the most "tender" score I have listened to of McKenzies describing it's parts both happy and sad and we are left to marvel at his writing.

Mark McKenzie seems like a great cabernet, while getting mature with age his melodic work is velvet to the ear now and his orhestrations pull everything together like a great wine and it's elements on the palate. McKenzie orchestrates so beautifully that when a change takes place the listener will either never notice or wonder how he pulled off the transition, perhaps in a listening moment alert to a change but having to replay the cue to get it once again to be sure.

There is not an single instrument or group of them he cannot equate into part of the whole. In the wondrous sound of his scores the transitions will make you think about how he did it - the segues so obvious to him but to the listener, introductions of a lovely choir of strings, french horns a subtle oboe solo or soft piano are - wow!

Mr. McKenzie worked extensively with, before the untimely death of, in my opinion, one of the top three best soundtrack composers to date - Jerry Goldsmith, gaining immeasurable experience from a master, orchestrating for and with Jerry some of the best scores ever. You cannot go wrong here. Mckenzie is on his way to being a major talent in the industry.

Cain is an A+. There are three vocals which are yours to grade.

CD is very good. Mostly instrumental which I personally love, very relaxing. There are only three songs that have vocals, all of which are very inspirational. It is very good music to bring back the story. If you don't like instrumentals this CD is not for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saving Sarah Cain, February 10, 2011
This movie is sooo good. Sarah is all caught up in herself as a writer her "well" is going dry. Her Amish sister passes away and she has to take responsibility for her nephews& nieces. She takes the kids away from the Amish people, the only thing they knew as their world, and put them in a whole new environment, The city. If you want to laugh and cry this is the movie for you. It's a great movie for the family. Just a hint finally a movie with a good ending.

I first bought the DVD movie "Saving Sarah Cain" on a recommendation from Amazon.com via buying Janette Oke's "Love Comes Softly" DVD series. Both are fine crafted Family entrainment movies directed by Michael Landon Jr. with either Christian or Spiritual moral lessons while not getting too campy. The music during "Saving Sarah Cain" fitted perfect with the story of a self driven news columnist who takes in her sister's Amish children. Most of the music is by Mark McKenzie who writes in a meditative matter to reflect the Amish spirit of peace. The music is good but at times I hear Ennio Morricone's "Mission" & James Newton Howard's "Snow Falling on Cedars" themes or tonality. If you have very little Movie Theme music in your CD collection then you will hear something refreshing, but if you collect music like I do...then this is a good CD but nothing original. The most original piece is #14 "Don't Leave Us" which doesn't follow like the rest of the music & has a great climatic ending. What I really like on this CD is "Here's My Life" by Barlowgirl which is rather profound in its theme of uniting spiritual need with surrender. At times the song takes on a James MacMillan chord structure. There are 2 other songs by 2 other "Christian Rock" musicians & all 3 of these sections are recorded different than Mark McKenzie's music. This is not a case of Classical versus Rock music but a recording imperfection where the volume & tonality are too harsh on the Rock music. My professional stereo is very revealing & I have to turn down the sound because the music is too grating for my ears. Maybe a normal stereo will not reveal this problem. I gave a "4" due to lack of originality in musical themes, but still a good CD to listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a "wondeful gut" movie about the Amish "Jah it is", September 15, 2008

I have been on a new kick of reading Beverly Lewis books and when I saw one was a movie I jumped on it.

I loved the film because it is all about doing the right thing even when it makes you give up what you want for yourself. It shows the stuff of real love.

Two sisters apart for years with unforgiveness between them. One dies and the other is left as legal guardian of 5 Amish children. Sarah is a big city writer and lives the luxury "fancy" life.

The children in the movie are perfectly casted. They look Amish for sure and for certain. Jah they do. I cried for happiness and sadness. It even has moments of real action in it.

I cannot recommend this movie enough.

Although I can't really decide, this may be my favorite of all of Mark McKenzie's beautiful soundtracks. Great variety of sounds and moods. Wonderful! I just recommend buying them all.
