5.0 out of 5 stars Saving Money
It is hard to justify spending money on anything when you live in poverty, but I thought that this book may pay for itself. I was right. I have only had it for a few months, and already it has helped me to grow enough food to pay for itself. My plan is to completely stop buying seeds within 3 years, and if all of the points in this book work as good as the ones that I...

3.0 out of 5 stars not so good
The info it's very general. For the new gardener or seed saver many questions are left with no answer. Like the time to soak seeds on water. I ended up with more questions than answers at the end, glad did not pay full price.

I bought this book so I could start harvesting my own seeds for vegetable gardening. This is the exact reference I was looking for. Each veggie detailed with instructions for selecting, protecting from cross polination, harvesting and storing. Lots of info for flowers too, but flower seed harvesting is much more straight forward, so I think it is covered appropriately.

This book has many practicle ideas on how to save hierloom seeds from year to year. It is a little older but still has sound advice that is easy to read and understand. It will be priceless to the beginner or the master gardener in a short time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book!, July 21, 2011
This review is from: Saving Seeds: The Gardener's Guide to Growing and Storing Vegetable and Flower Seeds (A Down-to-Earth Gardening Book) (Paperback)
I was torn between this book and Seed to Seed, and I ended up going with Seed to Seed because it was very highly recommended. It's ok and useful, but when I was able to check this book out from the library, if I had to do it over again I would have chosen Saving Seeds hands down.

The text is very readable and easy to use. The plants are not sorted alphabetically, but rather by seed family, which I think makes it very useful. While it doesn't have much in the way of pictures (it has a few black and white photos), the sketches are well done.

Once you are growing your own food, you should be able to gather seeds and prepare them yourselves, for the next years planting! This book tells you how, in easy to understand, species-specific terms. I reccomend it highly!

2.0 out of 5 stars Close, but not close enough, May 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Saving Seeds: The Gardener's Guide to Growing and Storing Vegetable and Flower Seeds (A Down-to-Earth Gardening Book) (Paperback)
The book was informative, however it lacked a certain sophistication which left many questions unanswered. Not enough time dedicated to flowers.

I have always thought our food supply would be controlled by hybridization and corporations. This book give you a leg up on your food supply and no mixing of seeds (hybrid). Great transaction, book in great shape. Thank you.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed so far, March 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Saving Seeds: The Gardener's Guide to Growing and Storing Vegetable and Flower Seeds (A Down-to-Earth Gardening Book) (Paperback)
So far I've only had the book a few days, yet the reason I got the book in the 1st place is to get me started on GROWING seeds, which IS indicated in the title. Not yet have I ran across anything about GROWING seeds. I see a lot about cross-pollinating & distance to plant, etc.... history of the seed.... nothing useful... YET. -Not what I had in mind. So far, I'm highly disappointed, and am likely to re-sell the book.
Once I've had more time to thoroughly review the book some more, I'll update my review.
