5.0 out of 5 stars A CONTINUUM OF LOVE -- A CHRISTIAN STORY, August 17, 2000
This review is from: Saving Shiloh (Hardcover)
The Shiloh trilogy is, without doubt, the best dog stories in creation. Phyllis Reynolds Naylor draws very real, believable characters that one can readily recognize and relate to. Her protagonist, Marty, exemplifies true Christian values when he is able to forgive Judd Travers. Villianizing Judd and making him a ready scapegoat would have been easy. It is to this author's credit that she protrays Judd as a tragic figure who has fallen on hard times and who has let the shadows of his past dictate the decisions he has made in his life. Making a hero out of Marty would have been too easy. Instead, the author shows a realistic, lovable boy who takes on major responsibilities. Marty grapples with the twin challenges of hatred for Judd and wanting to do the right thing, which is to help the man when he clearly needs it. He acknowledges these feelings and works hard to overcome them as he does now own Judd's hound, Shiloh. The beautiful little hound has a near-miss with death and Judd Travers saves his life. It is in the bond, this common love for the beagle that Marty is able to forgive Judd his cruelties and lesser foibles and Judd can start making peace with his life. There is nothing pat or simplistic about this story -- it will resonate in one's heart and conscious long after the last page is turned. It is a continuum of love -- Marty's love for his family and Shiloh, his acceptance and forgiveness of Judd Travers and Shiloh's unconditional love for the men who saved his life. It is a joyous moment in literature to see Marty own the delightful little beagle once and for all.

Please read the "Shiloh" trilogy. You'll be very glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saving Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, February 27, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Saving Shiloh (Paperback)
Great animal fiction about man's best friend

In Shiloh, West Virginia, a boy named Marty and a man named Judd became connected by a dog named Shiloh. Marty was worried about when Judd gets his dogs back he will turn them mean again. Marty is trying to find ways for Judd to be nice and take better care of his dogs. Marty tries to find was to help Judd. Marty finds out that Judd came from a family that abused him. In Judd's mind abusing is showing you care.

Marty also finds out that if you are nice to a chained dog he will learn to be nice. Marty believed Judd was like a chained dog. He believed if he showed Judd he cares Judd will to change. By changing Judd will help his dogs. However, Judd would not open his doors until Marty bring over Shiloh.

I really liked the book "Saving Shiloh" because it talks about how a dog can change people. This book also teaches a lesson if someone is being mean to you can change them by being nice. I really loved this book. It is a must read! It is great book for kids, who are 9 years old or older. Don't pass it up, read this fabulous book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Saving Shiloh, December 21, 2003
This review is from: Saving Shiloh (Paperback)
I liked the book because it had good dialog, description, and detail. The main characters were the dogs, the dad, and Marty. It was exciting and heart-stopping with vivid detail of Shiloh and the Baker's german shepard. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes dogs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Learning to Trust, May 9, 2003
This review is from: Saving Shiloh (Hardcover)
Marty's beloved beagle is in danger again. Folks in the West Virginia backwoods are mighty suspicious of the resident crank, Judd Travers, the last of a three-generation family known for vicious, anti-social behavior. This shunned man is notorious for his cruelty to his own dogs and his arrogant hostility towards all human kind. Marty's family has tried to win the man's trust by demonstrating basic kindness and offering tentative frienship--social virtues which have never been modeled or extended to him before. But the compasionate boy discovers that it's a steep, uphill battle to convince diehard
neighbors and townspeople that Judd is honestly trying to turn
over a new leaf.

Trouble is: Marty himself wavers in his own belief in the man's innocence, when a man goes missing, then turns up dead, during an alarming series of burglaries. The mystery builds as first a blizzard, then a flood, wreak havoc in the hill-country community. Will Shiloh ever be truly safe from Judd? Despite all Marty's efforts to convince the man of his sincerity, Shiloh himself is reluctant to set foot upon the man's hated property. This final part of the SHILOH trilogy takes up one month after the end of SHILOH SEASON. Can dogs--and men--be redeemed after years of negative conditioning? After all poor Shiloh has suffered, whose turn is it to save him this time?

4.0 out of 5 stars A good conclusion to the Marty/Shiloh trilogy!, July 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Saving Shiloh (Hardcover)
Marty and his dog Shiloh come full circle in this last of Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's trilogy. Having read each of the books in the series, I must say Shiloh is my favorite, but Shiloh Season and Saving Shiloh are well worth a reader's time! Naylor has a knack for naturally developing her characters. We want to hate Judd Travers from the beginning, but we, like Marty, wonder if there's a chance for Judd to really change. The experiences Marty has dealing with Judd and the anxiety that is described mounts to a dynamic conclusion that is not quite predictable, but desired by eager readers. Each of the Shiloh trilogy books has an easy style of writing, one that gives a realistic glimpse into rural West Virginia. We see and understand the struggles Marty goes through and anticipate a happy ending. Sometimes we are left hanging at the end of the chapter, but Naylor wraps up her Shiloh adventure with a satisfying conclusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saving Shiloh Review, December 15, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Saving Shiloh (Paperback)
I Think That Saving Shiloh was a great story it was a little sad and happy the story seems to like have a warm spot that makes readers want to love Shiloh and I wish they'd make a fourth book in the Shiloh trilogy. Shiloh to me seems like this lovable old beagle who just wants a home and the mean Judd Travers abuses the dog and kicks it around like its some ball. But Judd Travers starts to love Shiloh and even pets him now that Judd's stop drinking its like Marty's seen a whole different side of him. This Shiloh book will ensure you that it will be good I encouarge readers to read Shiloh, Shiloh Season, and Saving Shiloh to complete every readers Shiloh trilogy...

4.0 out of 5 stars Saving Shiloh-Janie 4th Grade, January 27, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Saving Shiloh (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book, but not as much as the other two Shiloh stories. There were a few suspensful chapters where I was begging to read the next to find out what happened. Other than that I found the story line to be slow and very similar to the other books. I would recommend this book. However, if you can only read one of the Shiloh series I would highly recommend the first book.
