Book Description

7 and upBuster's Adventures
The Saving of Sly Manatee Sly, a baby manatee, has let his appetite get the better of him. In search of hyacinths, his favorite snack, Sly has ventured to shallow water, where a collapsed dock now blocks his way home. Coming to his rescue is Buster, a boy who lives on the lagoon, and Buster's friend, Rob. Everyone is pulling for Sly's rescue!

Buster's third adventure imparts strong messages about the endangered manatee and what we can do to protect these creatures. Imaginative tale-telling, a complete glossary and an appendix with more information make this book a great way to teach children (and adults!) about animals and the environment.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-4-While Buster and Rob check on a heron they rescued in a previous adventure, they encounter a baby manatee that has ventured near an old dock with his mother and sister. The boys name him Sly and enjoy swimming with him. Unfortunately, his craving for water hyacinths almost leads to his demise when the dock collapses and traps him in a shallow pond as the tide recedes, but the boys' resourcefulness enables them to rescue him. Makowski's illustrations of the manatees are fine, but the people are wooden, and the backgrounds are merely adequate. Attributing thoughts and emotions to the animal is unnecessary. The inconclusive ending reinforces the title's position as one in a series. The book concludes with boating safety tips to protect manatees and three pages of facts. Those interested in nonfiction should consult Kathy Darling's Manatee (Lothrop, 1991). As a simple adventure story to promote environmental awareness, Harms's book might draw some limited interest.

Review

By using positive role models, these books hook children on the adventure of helping animals. The format gives them a sense of accomplishment and keeps them asking for more. -- Leslie McKee, Second Grade Teacher

Fantastic reading! Very Exciting; factual information concerning wildlife in its own environment. The encyclopedia facts in the back appeal to teachers and students. Wish I had one for each student. -- Eunice H. Price, Third Grade Teacher
