5.0 out of 5 stars Decide for yourself
Unfortunately there are some people using Amazon.com review space to wage a personal war against certain publishers and authors in hopes of selling more books for other publishers. This is really unfortunate. For those who use these reviews for buying decisions, like me, the dueling reviews seem personal now and not necessarily reflective of the writing or the story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been better
This book isn't bad. There's a lot of heart and soul. But there is a major problem telling apart the voices of the two narrators. They spoke, thought and reacted much of the time exactly alike. It was sometimes impossible to tell who was speaking from the prose itself. It made the book harder to read than it needed to be and ruined a lot of the tension...

If you click to find out more about the reviewers, you'll learn a lot. Several post only negative reviews, launch personal attacks and target authors from the same publisher.

I truly enjoy DS Bauden's writing, and LJ Maas and many authors with Dare2Dream and Bella Books. If you really want to decide if this book is worth your money, don't trust these reviews with alterior motives. Go to the author's web site and read excerpts and decide for yourself. You'll find it at http://www.dsbauden.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Story, September 8, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: A Saving Solace (Paperback)
This author really knows how to tug at the heartstrings. The scenes of Kelly remembering her time with her mother were touching and you could really feel the pain of what she went through. On the opposite side was Susan's pain of rejection by her family which was also heartbreaking. These two had been through so much, it was wonderful to see them find some peace together. This story breaks the mold of typical lesbian romance in such a refreshing way, you won't want to miss it. You know it's a good book when you find yourself talking back to the characters!

5.0 out of 5 stars An emotional story, September 1, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: A Saving Solace (Paperback)
This is easily DS Bauden's best work and a must-have for every bookshelf. In typical fashion, Bauden takes us on a rough ride of emotions but that's what makes the story so great -- we feel with these characters and for them. It's an intense story of two women, Kelly and Susan, who, through different circumstances, have lost the people that mean the most to them. We see their pain and anger in dealing with what life has handed them and watch them come together to try to find love and happiness again. It's a great story from a wonderful author. I absolutely did not want it to end. If this is the first of Bauden's books you read, it's a great choice, but make sure to get the others as well. They're all wonderful and she'll quickly become one of your favorite writers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clarification, April 12, 2004
By
This review is from: A Saving Solace (Paperback)
As publicist for Di Bauden, I feel compelled to respond to the review entitled Second Try posted here. It is not our style or wish to debate reviews. We respect everyone's opinion and right not to like a story. But the criticism in this review is based on an error by the reviewer. The writer comments on the book being written in first person. However, it is not written in that style. I suspect the reviewer may have read the original online `draft' of this story, which was written in first person. The published book is NOT written that way. The online draft is posted as a preview for fans on DS Bauden's web site but was not fully reviewed by Bauden's editor nor was it to be the version published in book form. We appreciate all readers opinion's and are grateful for the feedback received. But there is a very clear difference in the online version of this story and final, edited and published book. -- Ann Wesley

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique story, January 5, 2006
This review is from: A Saving Solace (Paperback)

This was a very easy to read novel. It was highly recommended by a close friend so I was eager to read it. The characters are extremely likable and very realistic. The last third of the book is tremendous and very well written. Conflicts are realistic and resolved true to character. And the romance is delightful.

4.0 out of 5 stars A book with some depth!, January 16, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: A Saving Solace (Paperback)
There are so many light romance books out there that tell the same story of two valiant women who fall for each other, but darn, there is personal stuff that *sob* keeps them apart! But then they figure out they can get over the stuff and they get together, end of story.

This book had more to tell, and the personal stuff isn't a single bad thing, it's more serious. It was like real life when you can't just make up your mind your problems will go away. This was not the best book I've read this year (so far, that's "Maybe Next Time") but a lot, lot better than the worst (so far, that's "Family Love"). It was worth the time and money.

Bauden could use some better editorial support as a number of little glitches ought to have been fixed, but it was nowhere near as bad as those Around We Go books, which just drove me nuts. The point of view made it sometimes hard to keep going, but there was heart and soul to it. Bauden writes like a pro who could use a good editor, too. All writers need editors!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Read, September 15, 2003

This review is from: A Saving Solace (Paperback)
A Saving Solace was a very moving story about two women rebuilding their lives. Though their lives seem to be very different, the similarities are incredible. I was completely caught up in the story and couldn't rest until I had read it cover to cover. This is the third novel I've read by this author and I would have to say it is definitely her best work. If you've not bought your copy yet -- run, do not walk to the checkout, you won't be sorry.

I absolutely loved this book and find myself thinking of the characters now months after I have read the book. I found the characters to be very real, feeling genuine emotions that I could readily identify with and the story was equally compelling to me. I cried, laughed, was frustrated and worried at various parts feeling for the main characters. It kept me going right up to the end..and then I wanted (and still want) more. A great read, one I will read again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read, September 11, 2003
This review is from: A Saving Solace (Paperback)
Ms. Bauden's story was touching, sexy, and uplifting. I agree with the reader who found herself talking to the characters. I wanted to smack one of them at one point, but found myself cheering for her at the end. There were parts that made me sob, laugh, and yell at the character. Basically, this book put me through a wide range of emotions which is a testament to the writer's skill. I am an avid reader of lesbian fiction, and I would have to say that this book definitely holds its own against any I've read from the larger presses. If you want a well-written story that will take you through twists and turns until you reach the happy destination, this book is for you!!!
