More About the Author

Carolyn Friedlander grew up in Lake Wales, Florida on a cattle and citrus ranch, where she spent most of her free time immersed in various creative activities such as drawing, painting, and sewing. She pursued a formal design education in college and graduated with a B.A. in Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis in 2006. After a stint in the professional architecture world, Carolyn sought a different occupation, one that would allow her to be wildly creative, utilize her design background, and work with her hands. It so happened that later that year, 2009, she learned to quilt. Though she had long known how to sew, quilting was a revelation for her, as it entailed a whole new set of tools, materials, and, most importantly, creative possibilities. She quickly recognized quilting as a new passion and set out to learn everything she could about the craft. In 2010, she founded her business, Carolyn Friedlander LLC.

Carolyn's custom machine quilting has received recognition at local and national shows. As a young quilter with a design school background, she was drawn to bright and bold fabrics and saw a need for clean, modern patterns. Thus, she began to create her own patterns. In the fall of 2012, her first fabric line with Robert Kaufman made its debut, and she been designing fabric collections with the Los Angeles-based company ever since.

July 2014 marked another milestone with the launch of Carolyn's first book, Savor Each Stitch: Studio Quilting With Mindful Design, published with Lucky Spool Media. Carolyn's designs have been featured nationally as well as internationally in publications such as Stitch Magazine, American Quilt Retailer, American Patchwork and Quilting, UPPERCASE, and Love Patchwork and Quilting.

Carolyn works from her hometown in Florida, a location she enjoys for its warm weather, few distractions, and thriving community of quilters and crafters. She loves to both learn from and teach others. In her work, she draws inspiration from features of the Florida landscape, such as its long leaf pines, palmettos, water, scrub land, and sand, as well as from the architecture, history, and cultural identity of the city of St. Louis.

I am a craft book junkie and more often than not, get excited about new titles, skim them when they arrive and put them aside. With Savor Each Stitch, I have not been able to put it down and come back to it often to look at the beautiful photos or study all the alternate options for the quilt patterns. There are a variety of projects and many options to make them your own. Most importanlty, Carolyn shares the thought processes behind color selection, scale, and technique for every project. It's almost like taking a full-scale art class. I love the idea of working in series and Carolyn definitely encourages the reader to do that. Fair warning: there are many hand-sewing projects so for those who do not love that technique, this may not be the book for you. I am usually not interested in applique or hand-sewing but you can still make all the projects or at least appreciate the lessons imparted, particularly on color theory. This is a must-buy for the quilter in your life!

I've been looking at quite a few quilting books over the past few months. I must have taken out three or four dozen from the library. This is, I think, my favorite of the bunch. I first heard of Friedlander when I saw her Artchitextures fabrics. Then I was able to get my hands on a fat quarter bundle of her Botanics line, and I was hooked. I gradually found her blog and heard she'd written a book, and I couldn't wait to read it. It has lived up to all my expectations.

When I buy a quilt book, first and foremost, I'm looking for quilts that I'm interested in making. This book, as much as any other quilt book I've browsed through, fits that bill. From the quilt featured on the cover, to the "rising sun" quilt as I call it (she calls it "facing east"), to her aerial grove quilt, I'm excited in making just about every quilt featured in the book. Normally, I consider it a win if I'm interested in making two quilts in a single book. Carolyn's quilts are simply different - they're a step sideways from the quilts I see featured over and over again in small variation in quilting books, but they are still beautiful, not weird or unattractive.

Carolyn's book is also a pleasure to read. The book is divided into sections - line, color, texture, etc. Carolyn explains what these features mean to her in terms of quilt design, and I enjoyed reading her philosophy.

A word of warning - the quilts are heavily applique focused. If applique is not your thing, you may not be interested in the patterns in the book. Then again, you might like them so much you'd be willing to give applique a try. Carolyn does needle-turn applique, something I've never tried - I've always done fusible web.

Love it! She's so talented. It's very interesting reading if you're ready to try designing quilts on your own or following her patterns for contemporary quilts. Make it part of your quilting library. I did.

Gorgeous, inspiring quilting book. Carolyn is bringing a wonderful fresh perspective to the quilting industry. I love that the projects in this book are modern, but in a different way from any other modern quilting books at the moment.
