Editorial Reviews

Review

“Deliciously photographed and lovingly shared, Alice’s recipes remind us to savor and celebrate life. To not just enjoy the meal, but to cherish the moments around them as well.” (Angie Dudley, author of Cake Pops )

“Savory Sweet Life is the perfect title for this book. Most of us either cook or bake; Alice Currah does both--beautifully. Savory Sweet Life offers a peek into Alice’s kitchen, one simple celebration at a time…she shares creative, appealing recipes that bear all the signs of a savvy cook.” (Pam Anderson, author of the Perfect Recipe series and How to Cook Without a Book )

“I’ve been a fan of Savory Sweet Life from the beginning, because Alice pours her heart and creativity into everything she cooks, bakes…and writes. I could marry Alice’s Caramelized Onion Clam Dip and live happily ever after with her Rustic Spiced Plum Tart. You’ll want to savor every yummy dish!” (Ree Drummond, author of The Pioneer Woman Cooks )

“Savory Sweet Life is cover-to-cover crowd pleasers.... Alice Currah offers classic dishes and fresh variations…. And kid-friendly treats such as root beer floats, oven-broiled s’mores and caramel corn, are great for little ones, or even adults that just want to feel like a kid again.” (Seattle Weekly )

“A must-have [with] its focus on organizing dishes according to events, and not just holidays. Hosts will appreciate simple but impressive fare like an olive, pesto, and tomato tart . . . and sweet and spicy wings, which come together with minimum fuss and seldom a hard-to-source ingredient.” (Publishers Weekly )

“If you’re thinking of buying food blogger Alice Currah’s new cookbook, “Savory Sweet Life,” make sure you’ve got some free time ahead of you - because once you see the luscious pictures inside, you’ll want to get into the kitchen immediately.” (Huffington Post )

“Currah’s approach to food is simple and family-friendly, but she elevates everyday from ordinary to extraordinary. Savory Sweet Life is a good choice for the home cook who wants to feed his or her family delicious food that is easy to prepare.” (Shelf Awareness )

From the Author

This cookbook is about great memorable food, family and friends, and celebrating the joys of everyday life. As I developed the recipes I was mindful of how busy families are these days and the reasons why people are too busy to cook, intimidated by a lack of confidence in the kitchen, or a combination of both. I wanted to write and photograph a cookbook that I could use (from a practical standpoint) everyday to feed my family, draw inspiration from, and have my kids someday recall their favorites recipes from their youth with a strong feeling of love and connection to me. I also wanted to write a cookbook which was a true representation of my life.

Chapters dedicated to both Mother's Day and Father's Day, birthdays, potlucks, hosting friends for lunch, Sunday mornings, meals for caring for others, summer entertaining, and many more will inspire you to cook with confidence and with ease. With each recipe accompanied by a gorgeous color photo, they are easy, accessible, and so delicious that people will think you are a gifted home cook based on how good the dishes are.

In case you're wondering if I actually cook these recipes throughout the year, the answer is a resounding YES! All the time! Several of my closest friends can vouch for how often I bring these recipes to parties and potlucks. The recipes in the cookbook are indeed my go-to dishes for feeding family and friends for any occasion.  From our home to yours, we hope you enjoy SAVORY SWEET LIFE.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Tool for the Visual Learner June 13, 2012
Format:Paperback
I bought Alice's cookbook at a book signing at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park about a week and a half ago. I have it on my coffee table and I am still looking at the pictures, reading and enjoying the visual experience. I have never been great in the kitchen and unless I follow a recipie the dish doesn't taste great and many times doesn't even look appealing.
Two days after I purchased the book, I had a coffee date scheduled at home. I decided to try making the peach croissants. This was a gutsy move for me because I have never used puff pastry and did not even know where to find it at the grocery store. Well, I was so pleased and proud that they turned out just right. They even looked almost as beautiful as the photo in the book. Best of all they really did taste like a bakery confection! WOW.
OK so now I'm on a roll. I have enough confidence to try something else. The next day I made the Chop Chop Salad for dinner. It turned out beautiful-picture perfect- and got rave reviews from the family.
There is another element of this cookbook that is fabulous. The recipies do not require more than a few ingredients and do not require loads of preparation time.
I adore this book. I am no Martha Stewart but I don't need to be now that I have this cookbook. I can prepare and serve delicious and gorgeous food with confidence. Thank you Alice Currah.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this cookbook! June 20, 2012
By ErikaT
Format:Paperback
My general rule when browsing cookbooks is if I get to more than 5 recipes that I wouldn't make then I put it down, no matter how pretty the pictures. I saw this one on display and picked it up and page for page it was a recipe I wanted to make and seemed easy enough that I actually would make most of the recipes. I carried it around with me for 3 days just pouring over each recipe, it's beautiful! My daughters (10 & 8) made the pound cake all by themselves, I was a little worried, but it was FANTASTIC. I told my husband to hide it so I would quit eating it. I also made the pear/gorgonzola salad which also was amazing, the dressing is unique and delicious. This is my favorite cookbook ever!!! I want to buy it for my friends and family as a gift. You will not be disappointed! I can't wait to make more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Personal, beautiful and useful June 11, 2012
Format:Paperback
This stunning book captures the life of a loving and busy family. The food is inventive, practical and approachable. It's not just food that causes you to drool over the gorgeous images, it's food that makes you want to jump into the kitchen and start cooking. Then when the cooking is done you'll want to pick up the book again and read her sweet stories of the life lived surrounding the food. So happy to have this book in my collection.
