This is a really swingin' CD. Ella took over Chick Webb's band after his death and it was one of the best big bands ever. The band didn't get the notoriety of bands like Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw or Glenn Miller but the band's pedigree was that they were the house band for the Savoy Ballroom. 'Nuff said.

Ella doesn't sing but she makes the band swing on this playlist of instrumentals. However, this is a live recording from the Savoy Ballroom and you hear Ella on many of the numbers egging the band on. It adds that special Ella touch.

As a dancer, I watch tempos and this one is packed with mostly uptempo songs great for Lindy Hop and Balboa. This CD should definitely be in your jazz library. However, be warned. If you are looking for Ella to be singing, you'll be disappointed. Buy "Ella and Basie" instead if you are looking for vocals and you'll be happy.

The music is wonderful, and the sound is remarkably good given these are recordings of radio broadcasts from 1939 and 1940. The only reason I gave 4 stars rather than 5 is to be certain it is clear to folks that these are all instrumental tracks - Ella does not sing here. If you want to hear Ella's vocal numbers, I recommend the 2-CD collection titled "Complete 1940 NBC Broadcasts."

But she does not sing, ok? I purchased this cd from a rummage sale at my office for $2 so I can't complain. When I put it on I kept waiting to hear her first vocal but it never came. But I was enjoying the music so much that it didn't really matter. I had no idea she had a period in her career where she was the band leader, so this opened up a new chapter of her life for me. Occasionally you can hear her egging the band on in the most playful and fun-loving way and there is no mistaking that voice for anyone else, even in that capacity. This cd is great fun from start to finish! What a wonderful surprise for two bucks!

Awesome CD, two of the track names are wrong, Sing You Sinners is titled wrong.
Couldn't find on any other digital outlets, so had to buy it here

This cd has a good sound but Ella's voice comes very seldom in a song!
