From the Publisher

Surveys show the "fear of designing and operating a web site" to be a major reason small businesses don't establish an online presence. So it gives us great pleasure to present this handy reference guide for small businesses seeking to build or redesign their web sites. It meets a need for many entrepreneurs and self-employed people.

More About the Author

My grandkids call me Grandma Peggi, but I don't feel like I'm of grandma vintage. I swim several times a week, attend lots of networking events, meetings and seminars, participate in Chamber of Commerce functions and manage a web design and business services firm. I enjoy people, books, music, good food and sunshine. The challenge and need for business development keep me hopping.

My Wordpix firm has produced some cool client books including: American Florists' Exchange's "Sending Flowers to America" (2008); Dr. Steve Smith's "Escape to the Mountain" (2007); C.T. Flynn's "A System of Universes" (2008); Stan Cody's "Teaching Outside the Box" (2006) and Jo Kelly's "The Truth About Being an Extra" (2006).

My writing career spans three decades and more than 500 articles on everything from rodeo to fine art, city projects to web marketing. It all started in 1974 when I became secretary and editorial assistant in the communications department of the Metropolitan Tulsa Chamber of Commerce in 1974. My boss put my writing skills to work. I reviewed free lancers' stories, corrected and marked them up (pre-computer days, mind you) for typsetting and reviewed them again after my boss fine-tuned them. The "Before" and "After." After 10-15 hours a week for four years of that routine, I knew how to tighten a story, write headlines, organize content, and write catchy lead-ins and closers. No college program could come close to my four-year, highly focused on-the-job training.

Soon I was a regular writer for our monthly rag, and other magazines were requesting my stories. I loved it! As a single mom, the extra income was a lifesaver and besides, I loved to write. As a fast, accurate typist (try 100+ wpm) with good spelling and grammar, I could crank out stories fast. I literally wore out my little Smith Corona electric typewriter.

Today, I write for THE BLOOMIN' NEWS, a bi-monthly newsmagazine for the Los Angeles Flower Market (see www.bloominnews.com); and I write for clients' websites. So I'm still in there caressing the keys every day. It's a joy to use this special gift.

As a professional web developer, I wish every one of my new customers would read this book BEFORE they begin the web planning process with me. Web Savvy offers basic information that helps people get some solid footing before they step off into the unknown. Yes, it's really basic stuff -- just exactly that. You get a better feel for what content/text/graphics will help your site become truly functional and useful to your visitors; and you find out how to plan a basic but effective

marketing plan. Web Savvy is absolutely the place to begin the process!

3.0 out of 5 stars Guide for small business owner without any web knowledge, June 10, 2001
By

This review is from: Web Savvy for Small Business (Paperback)
New business owners, especially the small business owner, need concise answers to specific questions in order to get their Web site up and running quickly. The author provides just what is needed for the novice to select a URL, organize a navigable Web site, hiring the right team to create the site, and effective ways to promote it. Although the book is true to its title, I found the book to be really a primer, the contents of which most people could intuit. Pass on this one if you have other titles that cover Web basics.
