Ok, I bought this because I love Rachel Brice and her dancing buuuutttt...imagine being blind folded and riding along with your garbage truck driver. The sounds of falling coins, banging garbage can lids and creepy record player type sounds was not to my liking. It's just too weird. I'm attempting to listen to it in the hopes it will grow on me but its not looking good...

Sawdust. Here is the simplest way to describe it:

Think Old West. Add Saloon. Add a Circus. Add Creepy Fairgrounds at Night.

Mix thoroughly in varying quantities, and you have the music for this album. I will admit, it certainly isn't for everybody. I discovered that it made a wonderful album to play while handing out Halloween candy on top of being a fantastic album to dance to!

I give this a 5-star, I love it that much!

However, here would be why you might not want to buy it:

It is a strange sort of music on some tracks - ie. dropping and rolling coins, etc.

It is very eccentric music.

It is creepy music and might scare small children.

It is distinctly mood music - you don't want to use it unless you intend to get the feeling across of the music you want to use.

Don't buy this if you are looking for something like A Tribal Metamorphosis - it is like it in the way a cat is like a dog. There are a few similarities, but it pretty much ends at having four legs and a tail.

Reasons to buy it:

You don't mind creepy fairgrounds at night.

You want something exceedingly unique to work into your repertoire.

You want good creepy mood music.

You are willing to be open-minded.

The merch guy at BellyDance Superstars steered us away from this album ("that one is more ... hard, this other one is more popular") but if you enjoyed the industrial/goth tribal pieces in the current show, this IS the right album to get. Tribal Derivations by Beats Antique and Urban Dervish by Oojami are both good albums too (recommended!), but are not the same style.

5.0 out of 5 stars Richly Textured New Work - Excellent!, July 28, 2007
This review is from: Sawdust (Dig) (Audio CD)
Pentaphobe has taken his music to a much higher level with this latest CD.

Sawdust is an evocative work which displays greater musical sophistication than the earlier CD - 'Saiyr, a Tribal Metamorphosis'.

The liner notes cite the influence of circus and sideshow and although this is evident Pentaphobe returns the favour by creating tracks that beg to be performed to.

There is a multi-textured emotive quality to many of the tracks and plenty of musical surprises.

Stand out tracks include - Kitten Pig, Dawn in the City, Victim to the Charms of Radio and Contemptuous Sniff.

Having said that, the CD is a musical journey and all of the tracks add up to a very pleasing whole.

Looking forward to the next CD by this uniquely creative musician.

This is a totally objective review by Pentaphobe's adoring mumsy ;-)

5.0 out of 5 stars DARK and DANCEABLE, October 19, 2007

I agree with the other reviewer that Sawdust is better than the Tribal album although I bought both. I found that when I listened online I couldn't really appreciate this artist. When I received the albums today and did my dance lesson with them, things came out of my body that were a surprise to me. I loved the multilayered textures. I felt like a puppet one minute, a mechanical man another.. just wonderful for movement classes.. I have fell in love with this artist and look forward to more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Eh..., November 12, 2008

Not what I was expecting, though this is the first cd I bought from this band. Very circusy, but highly reccomended if you're into that kind of music.

This album is amazing. Granted I am new to Pentaphobe I was first introduced a few weeks ago when I was looking for Middle Eastern music. That brought me to belly dancing and tribal beats. Very unique kind of music and I love it.

One of my favorite songs on this one is "Unknown Hand". Just seems like a perfect song for a cloudy or rainy day, which today is =). Look forward to more of his work.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just a bit dull, February 21, 2008

This review is from: Sawdust (Dig) (Audio CD)
That's it really, I just found this album a bit dull. Not 'weird' or 'boundry breaking' or 'creepy'. Just plain old dull.

I guess it might be a bit out there if you've never listened to experimental ambient music or electronica, but it you have, there's nothing much thats new here.

The Sea Hag "Arrrrrg" (Wish it was Key West, Florida) - See all my reviews

I bought this album mainly because I am a big fan of Rachel Brice, but also because I wanted something non-traditional to which to bellydance. There are only three tracks to which I would consider dancing. The rest sound like a construction site, with banging pipes, clinking chains and dropping coins(?)! Although I love tribal bellydance, and I am certainly attracted to the unique and unusual, (being decorated with various tattoos and piercings), I found this CD to be a little too "out there".

5.0 out of 5 stars which track to use?, October 22, 2007
This review is from: Sawdust (Dig) (Audio CD)
An absolutely fantastic cd to dance to. Only problem is which track to choose from. I am sure I will be able to use at least 5 tracks to do a gothic tribal fusion dance, and that is only to begin with.

I would recommend that you listen to this one over and over... you will get addicted.
