Contractor and avid hiker in Tucson AZ
My young kids are now experts at this. Have used it on numerous unknown stings / bites - and have watched liquid come of the sting hole, and then seen less swelling / irritation. One sting in particular had my son almost crying, and he experienced immediate relief. I've had two employees go the hospital for (probably black widow or brown recluse) stings - and now keep this around (we have two kits).
No disrespect to the Doctor who does not approve of this and says to get medical attention, but I completely disagree with him about not using this first. We all get to live with our choices - and my way of looking at it as a mechanical engineer with a masters degree is getting some poison out is better than not getting some out - and I'll risk a little tissue damage from the vacuum force around the wound. Additionally if I'm bit by a rattle snake in one of the places I go hiking alone I'm gonna have to walk and hour out and then drive an hour to the hospital. If thats the case getting out what poison I can (even if its only 10%) is better in my opinion than walking for an hour, driving for an hour and then asking the emergency room to fix me after the poison have been circulated in my blood stream for two hours.
Make your choice, live with the consequence - Mine is to keep and use the vacuum when needed.

This extractor is great for a VARIETY of uses. It's great for it's intended purpose, such as bug bites, bee stings, etc., but it is also great for getting out splinters, glass slivers, blackheads, etc. It has an incredibly strong suction capability. Yet, is not painful, and does not leave a mark.

While camping in the Allegheny Mountains, something bit or stung me on the calf. Not knowing what it was, I figured I'd wait and see if I started having any kind of reaction to it. Sure enough, within about thirty seconds, the area became tender, puffy, and I had a severe burning pain at the wound site. After a few minutes with the Extractor, though, the pain was completely gone, and with minimal bruising from the suction, too. The other really nice thing about the Extractor is that it is relatively easy to use one-handed, and the plastic attachments are very easy to clean and sterilize between uses.

After reading a brief mention in the scout handbook I went to the local outfitters to check this thing out. Looked like a quality product so I purchased one. I've used this countless times on mosquito bites, and stings(I've been lucky enough NOT to have tried it on a snakebite) - this thing works wonders. Mosquito bites are reduced to a non-itching red mark overnight - I used to itch FOR DAYS. Stings as well are made better quickly after using this wonderful device. Usually sells for between $15 & $25 depending on where you shop but either price is a BARGAIN and no family should be without one.

I have always kept one of these kits at my cabin in Kentucky in case of snake bites. I was recently there and got stung by a wasp. It was very sore for several days. I entirely forgot that this kit could be used for bee stings. On the last day there my 12 year old son was stung by a wasp. Having read the info in the kit (bored I guess) the night before I used the extractor on him immediately. It was amazing to watch the wasp venom coming right out of the wound.
Unlike me, my son suffered no more than if He'd had a mosquito bit.
I now have a kit at home also and bought two more kits to give to friends.

I think this is a must-have for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. It covers prevention and treatment of snake bites, bee stings, scorpions stings, tick bites, etc, etc, etc in the included manual. And this isn't just a syringe you use for suction -- this is designed for its intended purpose and I can easily use it one-handed.
To use it you just select one of the four "heads" that matches your "bite size", attach it and pull the plunger out, cover your bite, then push the plunger down. It does the work for you after that, slowly extending the plunger out on its own and creating a lot of suction that draws out the cooties. Easy to use on yourself.
The kit weighs 3.6oz and that's including the plastic box, a disposable razor (for shaving hair/creating good suction), two afterbite sting/pain relief wipes, two alcohol wipes, and a comprehensive manual(although mostly common sense). Just the guts (four heads and extractor tool) weigh 1.1oz. Most first aid kits will have alcohol/bite wipes but if not, you will now.

This pump is phenomenal. The old snake bite kits with the razor are outdated. It surprises me that they even make them today. And it surprises me even more that stores actually carry them, especially when this product exists. There's simply no comparison. I bought one of these a couple years ago and kept it in my hiking gear.
Last summer I was bit by a Hobo spider and this pump saved me a trip to the ER. I was amazed at how powerful the pump is. I could clearly see the venom as it was being sucked out. Afterwards, the skin discoloration and the intense burning sensation from the bite were gone. The only evidence that it ever happened was the two fang marks in my skin. Someone else in a similar situation might want to make a trip to the clinic, just to be safe. Sometimes, though, you're far in the backwoods and can't get to help readily. At times like that, this pump could potentially save a life.
Thankfully, I haven't had to use this for a snake bite, but I have no doubt it would work. I now keep two of these close by--one in my house and the other in my car. I use them for mosquito bites, too, and they effectively eliminate the itching. I recommend this pump to EVERYONE and wouldn't be without it.

I love these things. I lost my old one and had to find this one online. When you get a bug or mosquito bite, use this right after and it will go away and not itch.
