Absolute Micron Filtering Technology Makes The Difference

illustration of filter microtubes
"U" shaped micro-tubes allow water to enter into their core

The proprietary element of Sawyer’s water filters is comprised of tiny "U" shaped micro-tubes that allow water to enter into their core through tiny micro-pores. The high number of those tiny tubes and their surface area allows the filter to have one of the fastest flow rates in the world. This high flow rate eliminates the need to store water, reducing the possibility of water contamination after the filtration process.

Each filter is certified for absolute microns; that means there is no pore size larger than 0.1 in size. This makes it nearly impossible for harmful bacteria, protozoa, or cysts like E. coli, Giardia, Vibrio cholerae and Salmonella typhi (which cause Cholera and Typhoid) to pass through the Sawyer Mini filter. Sawyer filters have been tested by independent and qualified research laboratories and found to remove 7 log (99.99999%) of bacteria and 6 log (99.9999%) of protozoa, exceeding US EPA standards. The filter does not remove chemicals, dissolved solids, or viruses. However, viruses are very rarely found in North America or when traveling to foreign cities.

Sawyer's revolutionary filter technology is in use by hundreds of groups, including non-profit organizations, relief agencies, and governments in more than 70 countries around the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will I know when the filter is full?

The flow of water will slow down. However, it will never fail. Once the filter starts to slow down simply backwash it and it will be as good as new.

Is this good for kids at camp?

Yes! It is easy and safe. It couldn't be more perfect! Its small, lightweight and priced so that everyone can have their own filter. It doesn't need all the small parts and accessories of first generation filters to move from a hydration pack to a bottle to a pouch. It has it all!

Can I put the filter inline on my hydration pack?

Yes, connectors for your hydration pack hose are built into the filter.

Can I put the filter on a different / smaller bottle?

As long as the bottle has a "standard" thread you can. Most soda and disposable water bottles made worldwide use this thread.

How often should I clean the filter?

For longer filter life, you should backwash and sanitize the filter after every outing.

If I backwash it, will the bacteria in the city water grow in the filter?

Sawyer recommends sanitizing the filter before storing it. If you backwash the filter and then use it, bacteria from the city water will not grow.

Is it going to get clogged while I'm out on a trip?

Even with very high particulate /turbid water you should get 5 to 10 gallons through the filter. If this is not enough water for your trip you should either plan on field backwashing your filter.

With a total field weight of 2 ounces it fits in the palm of your hand. This tiny filter does the same job that the Sawyer Point ONE filter does but now in a more compact, personal size. Filtering up to 100,000 gallons of water, this may be the last water filter that you buy. The Sawyer Mini filter is perfect for everything from camping with the kids to traveling abroad where tap and bottle water cannot be trusted. The filter removes 7 log (99.99999%) of all bacteria (like salmonella) as well as other harmful bacteria which causes cholera and E. coli and 6 log (99.9999%) of all protozoa such as giardia and cryptosporidium. These removal rates equal or exceed other filter options. EPA guidelines allow ten times more protozoa left in the water than Sawyer Point ONE filters allow.

So first off, let me say I ordered this with my Prime account, and it comes with free 2-day shipping...it got here in 1 day. I immediately took it out in the backcountry for a day hike with the dog to give it a try/test in the field.

We made it to a nice frozen shoulder of the Rattlesnake Creek in Missoula, MT. The temp was below freezing, i'de say 30F, or somewhere around there. I chipped through an ice shelf on the creek and dunked the bag into the ice cold water. Filling it was easy with the current but I can see some wishing it came with a bigger bag because it doesn't look like much when the bag is filled. I will probably use a 32oz Platypus bag I have in the future, and carry the included 16oz bag as a backup! Anyway, I screwed the filter onto the bag, tipped it upside down and water came out with a very effortless squeeze. After I got done laughing about how simple this was, I gave Yoshi a drink as well (my English Bulldog). He also took to it well, as he's a big fan of drinking from water bottles anyway. So yeah, this is a dog friendly design!

Also out of curiosity I affixed the straw directly to the filter and drank directly from the creek and it was quite easy to do. The amount of suction required was similar to drinking a milkshake, and the flow rate was surprisingly great. At that point one can either shake the filter free of the water still inside the filter, or blow through it providing the same effect.

When I got home I did the back flush with the syringe twice, and the thing flushed perfectly. This thing was a piece of cake to use, and was exactly what I was looking for to carry in my Heli Pack whenever I go out in the backcountry. I would recommend this filter to anyone!...and for $20, you cannot beat this.

The Sawyer Mini is amazingly light and fast. It is much faster than I expected. Roll the bottom of the squeeze bag gently like a toothpaste tube and clean water flows quickly into a bottle or a drinking bag. It even improved the taste of "safe" water which was clear but had an aftertaste when consumed unfiltered. Replace the hard plastic packaging with a kitchen storage bags (freezer bags are more durable) and it takes up very little pack space. I used it to demonstrate water filtration at a Scouting event and everyone was impressed by the size and speed. This has earned a permanent spot in my backpack. I bought some extra 1-liter Platypus bags for the clean water.

In general, the water filter works wonderfully. Specifically there are a couple of limitations built in to the product. First, it isn’t really gravity fed, the filter is fed by pressure provided by squeezing the container holding the pre-filtered water. I’ll admit that the pressure doesn’t have to be much to provide a steady stream of water. I suspect that the problems people have with the bag is that they try to force the water through the filter too quickly and tear the bag.

One of the built in problems is that the container which has the unfiltered water in it and on it is above the filter and the container that will hold the filtered water. One would want to wipe the unfiltered water container of most of the water on its exterior to keep the filtered water container as clean as possible.

I bought the filter with a sixteen ounce bag for the dirty water. Using the filter convinces me that the 16 ounce bag is too small. The bag isn’t completely emptied when it is used so collecting a half gallon of water for example would require many repeated filling and draining of the water bag. There are two easy solutions:
A. Buy a 32 ounce water bag
B. Bring along a two liter plastic bottle. Emptying a two liter plastic bottle is much quicker than and equally as easy as emptying the bag. Neither the bags nor the plastic bottle have valves so eventually a partial vacuum forms in them although it is an easy matter to invert the filter and container and release the coupling to allow air into the container.
When the filtering operation is finished one must remember to move the dirty water container away from the clean water container to avoid accidental contamination because the bag retains a little water.
All in all this is an excellent water filter for the backpacker and I'm very happy with my purchase.

I've used the regular Sawyer Squeeze for years and found it to be the lightest, most practicale filter for backpacking. I was excited to get the mini since I've moved into ultralight backpacking. This ways over an ounce less and is more compact. It works as well as the original abliet the tiniest bit slower. I never use the bags that come with it. I've used a Nalogene flexible canteen (plastic pouch) with a fitting that allows the Sawyer to fit directly too it. The nalogene cantene bag has a wide mouth which makes filling from your water source a breeze. The best just got better!

At this price point, for what this is, this should be a REQUIRED purchase for every human on the planet! Nothing is more important than water (ok, air I guess), and this does an outstanding job of filtering it. The size platform of this particular unit is so unobtrusive, that it is a true EDC item in a glovebox, purse, lunchbox, prep bag, etc. I use a sawyer full size at home for all my coffee maker water, as I have extremely hard and calcified water. After a year of daily use, my coffee maker still looks and works like new, with zero crusty buildup.

Now the full size can stay in my kitchen and I have a new baby sawyer that fits in the hip belt pocket of my pack. Life is good! Since freezing will destroy the membrane in these, I'm actually purchasing extras for emergency use and keeping them unused. At $20, there really is no reason anymore to not have water filtration capabilities stationed in every car, boat, camper, pack and bag you own.
