Still not available in the US on VHS or DVD,
By D. S. Wymore "Golden Age of Hollywood fan" (Catskill Mountains, NY) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Saxon Charm [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.0 Import - Spain ] (DVD)
For some odd reason, many people think that every film ever made is available on VHS or DVD. Not so, and this is one of them. From Universal Studios, this is one of the last films of early Hollywood actor Robert Montgomery (father of Bewitched star Elizabeth Montgomery). Perhaps Universal doesn't think it has commercial value enough to release it but I think there's enough Susan Hayward fans out there that would buy it. The cover of this Spanish version is very misleading - Miss Hayward never poses like that in this film. She plays a housewife whose author husband (handsome John Payne) is reluctantly taken for a ride by charming Broadway producer Matt Saxon (Montgomery). There are several good scenes, including one of Montgomery's girlfriend Audrey Trotter auditioning for a night club. I own a bad bootleg VHS of this film (because it's NOT available commercially) and would gladly buy a commercial copy if it were available.

The Spanish cover of this undeservedly hidden gem is indeed misleading. Robert Mongomery plays Saxon, and you can't take your eyes off of him. He is thoughtless, cruel, haughty, imperious, a total rat, and totally delightful. Besides Montgomery, you get wonderful performances from two other pros, sweet Audrey Totter, and the great Harry Morgan.
PLEASE make it available. It is extremely relevant today, and would also be a nice intro to all of Montgomery films, especially the pre-code wonders, in which he stole the show with his real charm and sparkling wit. If Saxon Charm were remade today, only George Clooney's Saxon would barely come close to Mongomery's unforgettably 'charming' performance. |
