My 12 year old son has used Saxon materials at home for 4 years. His younger sister is currently using 8/7. It can be challenging, but they've been very successful! It's nice as a mother of 5 to have confidence in the Saxon program as it frees me up to deal with other things. If they have a question, it is easy just to review the short lesson and find the answer! If I could give it 6 stars, I would. Now my third child is also in Saxon. Thank the Lord for this effective curriculum. The results have been great!

Since we homeschool, I have been looking for a good math series to help my dd with her math-phobia... this is it. We also have 6/5, 7/6 and she loves them. They do alot of review, add new topics well. It is really great.

First of all, notice that this is only the testing packet - not the actual text for Math 87.
We homeschooled our kids over a period of years, and Saxon Math, including Math 87, was always our choice for math texts. I also teach in a classical Christian school where we use Saxon Math as well. I find that for most students, if they will take the time to read the lesson well, do all of the problems, and then rework any problems they miss then they will achieve a high degree of mastery of the material at hand. Math 87 will prepare the advanced student for Algebra 1, without having to proceed to Algebra ½. This will only be true if both student and teacher are diligent in doing all of the problems, checking them immediately, and reworking any missed problems. The greatest advantage of Saxon Math is that each lesson provides practice not only for the new problems but also built-in review for every kind of problem the student has previously encountered. Math 87 is no exception to the rule that Saxon Math texts help students learn math well. After 87, all of my kids who have taken it were definitely ready to move on to the next level, although I chose to have my daughter get the extra practice of doing Algebra ½ as well. In general, Saxon Math, including Math 87, is highly recommended. It is especially ideal for homeschooling families.

I like this textbook. It explains problems fairly well. The price was very reasonable.

I used it for homeschooling. It was a temporary situation during an extended move. They are in public school now but we still use this book for review. It is the best!!! It teaches in a simple - easy to understand - way!

Saxon Math Review,
This review is from: Saxon Math 87: An Incremental Development (Hardcover)
My daughter has used Saxon since the 4th grade. She is now is 7th. However, I have recently switched and am much more pleased. Saxon is ok, but I have found that it moves too quickly without solidifying any information before moving on to the next. Sure, it continues to make the child revisit what they have learned, but you have to keep referring back constantly because it was never really locked in. I prefer a math that really practices many problems in the same chapter; concentrating only on that one subject learned before moving onto the next. Hence, when they do come across what they've already learned, they don't have to keep flipping back pages to go over it again! If you have to keep referring back, then ya didn't really know it in the first place. Some of the explaination are vague in my opinion. Though some are very good. Saxon also throws in curve balls before the child has perfected how to do a new lesson. In other words, it teaches you how to do something - gives you practice problems and within those practice problems, throws in something challenging. Why? Just practice what you're learning first - then throw in the curve ball once it's perfected.
