Book Description

5 and upK and up
The creators of the popular Say Hola books now take their Spanish-language adventure to the circus. Readers will get to see the greatest show on earth as performed by trapecistas (trapeze artists), payasos (clowns), leones (lions), and elefantes (elephants). Through whimsical art and rhyming text, Say Hola to Spanish at the Circus is a great way to learn the second most spoken language in the U.S.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

"Come to el circo, bring tu mamá and tus hermanos, abuelos, papá... Behold chimpances on their bicicletas. Then look out for monos on motocicletas." The third title in the Say Hola series by Susan Middleton Elya and Loretta Lopez uses the same format as the first two (Say Hola to Spanish and Say Hola to Spanish, Otra Vez (Again!)), blending English and Spanish words in bouncy verses, illustrated with silly, costumed critters. Beginning Spanish language students (or anyone who loves to explore new languages) will delight in the Spanish/English wordplay as they make their way through the big top at the circus. It's easy to figure out what each Spanish word means from the context of the lively rhymes accompanied by bright, playful pictures. There's no reason learning a new language shouldn't be loads of fun--and this book proves it! More than 70 oversized, italicized Spanish words are introduced, and a glossary (with a pronunciation guide) allows readers to double-check what they've learned. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-The "Say Hola" folks do it again, mixing English and Spanish in just the right proportion so readers and listeners can clearly understand the text. This time, the characters go to the circus. "Come to el circo. Bring tu mam ,/and tus hermanos, abuelos, pap ." A pig, lamb, rabbit, and turtle are also attending. In the one-ring circus, children will see payasos (clowns), seals, lions, an octopus playing instruments, and a chicken. These animals might not be in most people's circus experience. Indeed, the author stretches the theme to include explanations for the weather and nature: as the show ends and the spectators leave the tent, they experience a shower and see a rainbow, plants, and a butterfly. The rhyme scheme is occasionally awkward, forcing a few lines and interrupting the flow of the book. Cartoon illustrations in flat golds, reds, purples, and blues have humorous details. Lots of two-page spreads give a sense of the size of the ring and the crowd. Like the earlier titles, this one is useful, but it's not quite as good.

More About the Author

Susan Middleton Elya grew up near Des Moines, Iowa, went to college 35 miles away, and then left her state to teach in the middle-of-nowhere Nebraska. She wanted to teach 3rd grade but ended up teaching high school Spanish instead (due to her double degree from Iowa State University). After 8.5 years of teaching in the Midwest, she moved to San Diego to get married and ended up teaching Spanish to native speakers in Ramona, California. Then a move with her husband to the Bay Area left her jobless, with a new baby, and with plenty of time to write. She started submitting stories for publication in 1988 and finally struck gold with Say Hola to Spanish, a nonfiction picture book from Lee & Low, in 1994. Now, 26 titles later, Elya is working on novels, as well. She has two grown children and one nearly-grown child, and still loves to make up stories, do school visits, and remember what it was like to be a kid. She also has an antiques and book store in Danville, California, where she sells autographed copies of her books. Check it out at www.thepolkadotattic.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for parent/child read-aloud!, August 16, 2000
The creators of different introductory Spanish language books return with a third volume where action takes place at the circus. English/Spanish words accompany observations of circus life and scenes in Say Hola to Spanish, a gentle learning tool which is perfect for parent/child read-aloud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teaching Spanish to a 2 yr. old!, June 23, 2000
As father of two kids, I am always looking for tools to help teach them Spanish. Due to their age I am still keeping it very basic and what a more wonderful way to introduce them to not only a little Spanish but more importantly a little taste of Spanish culture. My children absolutely loved the illustrations which made the book that much more enjoyable. I would highly recommend this wonderful Spanish experience to any parent and their child.
