Say Yes to the Sotflightes,

I must admit, I'm usually a little embarrassed to admit to friends just how much I love the Softlightes. Why, you ask? Well, it mostly has to do with how sticky-sweet and poppy their music and lyrics can be. The band's previous incarnation was The Incredible Moses Leroy, and I fell head -over-heels in love with their last album "The Incredible Moses Leroy...become the Softlightes". While this new album has some of the same lighthearted, transcendent moments that fill the last album, it just doesn't have the same depth. Rest assured though, your inner-cheese ball will be singing along to songs like "The Microwave Song," "Heart Mode of Sound," and "A Town Named Blue." This is truly indi-pop at is best, and this album along anything else by The Incredible Moses Leroy is great for listening to in the car on a sunny day with the windows rolled down. So who cares about being "cool," say yes to being happy and let your inner-cheese ball sing out with the Softlightes.

This LP has been in constant revolution in my cd player for over a year. The songs are infectious, poppy in the best possible way, and with a tinge of melancholy when they need be. Get it.

Way to go, Ron Fountenberry. It's almost as if the transmutations the name of your band goes through are intentionally confusing. I almost missed the EP and LP CD's under your latest moniker, Softlightes, late in 2006 and then again in 2007. Most famously known as the brains behind The Incredible Moses Leroy, Fountenberry created a CD in 2003 entitled "Become the Soft.Lightes" With a wonderful mix of infectious beats, nods to electronica-lite, fairy-tale lyrics and a voice the crooned so smoothly and cool throughout (almost letting me forgive Rusty Squeezebox and Mike Randle for the fact they need to release something new), "Become the Soft.Lightes" also falls in my Top 10 albums of all time. I literally played it out. Meaning, I had to purchase a second copy because the first one started to soft-clip and skip. And a third, fourth, fifth, sixth, etc. for friends and family, ect.) I just found "Become the Soft.Lights" so fresh and new. Well, "Say No!" is unfortunately not as brilliant, but still deserves a seat at my 2007 Top 20 Table for carrying forward many of the elements both The Incredible Moses Leroy CD's managed to introduce. Fountenberry really hasn't changed course here, but mildly does head into uncharted waters on occasion and when he does, he trips and things become less melodious and adventurous. In the end, "Say No!" is just a tad more difficult to simultaneously and consistently slide down to your heart and tickle your brain when compared to his earlier efforts.
