This guide enables English-speaking health care providers to communicate with Spanish-speaking patients. It focuses on practical language skills used in first aid and emergency situations, routine home visits, admission, and testing. Units 1-3 present typical questions and instructions used in the clinical setting; unit 4 includes additional vocabulary that the care professional might need; unit 5 offers an overview of Spanish grammar; and unit 6 describes cultural variations among Spanish-speaking groups, common health beliefs, and popular cures. The text includes typical "scenes", set in the hospital and community, in order to demonstrate the correct use of basic questions and statements - Spanish phrases are on the left, English translations on the right. At the end of each chapter there are short reviews, allowing readers to check their progress and understanding of ket terms. There is also a phrase index, which acts as a guide to specific questions, greetings, and commands. In addition, a pronunciation guide is included.
