Editorial Reviews

Legendary guitarist Grant Geissman has thrown down the gauntlet that separates the Jazz men from the Smooth Jazz boys. Say That! is a triumph, a collection of thirteen original Grant Geissman compositions that play like a righteous melding of 1960s Wes Montgomery, Horace Silver, and Jimmy Smith. It's real music that swings, simmers, smolders, and burns. It's good for the soul, and anything but 'smooth'. Featuring the jazz version of the Theme from Two and a Half Men, the hit CBS-TV series (composed by Geissman). Original cover art by beat/'low brow' artist Miles Thompson! Includes a full color insert with extensive liner notes by noted jazz critic Bill Milkowski, and a bonus facsimile piece of sheet music for Say That!

I am delighted to have happened on this CD. I have been thoroughly enjoying this excellent group, essentially a traditional guitar-based jazz quintet, with sax, keyboards (piano or B3), bass and drums. Grant Geissman is an established pop and smooth jazz instrumentalist, so if you are familiar with his previous work you might be a bit surprised by this CD. The graphics and packaging are unique. The CD plastic itself is black and looks like a record! I had my doubts, but I assure you it plays fine. A miniature copy of the hand-written sheet music for the title cut is included along with a separate fold-out set of notes by Bill Milkowski. Overll, one of the most pleasing and creative efforts I have run across.

You don't know his name, but you know his signature---the guitar solo from Chuck Magione's 1978 smash hit, "Feels So Good." Since then, he's been a studio musician extraordinaire, musical explorer and occasional purveyor of smooth jazz. With Say That! he goes retro, resurrecting images of Horace Silver and Lee Morgan's soul jazz outings of the early `60s, and most especially conjuring up memories of Wes Montgomery (with and without Jimmy Smith.) There's also a touch of Brazil, a smattering of Yellowjackets-like contemporary jazz, and an expansion on "Theme from Two and a Half Men" which he co-wrote for the TV show. Borrowing Tierney Sutton's rhythm section (bassist Trey Henry and drummer Ray Brinker), Geissman is a helluva guitarist, electric and acoustic, and saxman Brian Scanlon is a perfect foil. Rich in variety, this is a great album for those who don't realize they like jazz, and for those who do. --Jim Newsom

Grant Geissman has been recording for years and is quite prolific. To me, this is his best work ever. The heads and progressions are interesting without being obtuse. He plays to entertain and engage us rather than impress the LA music crowd. Grant has great depth of talent and he harnesses perfectly on Say That! I love it.

This Cd is an Amazing effort by Grant Geissman and Co. The band he's put together for this outing is top notch! A wide array of styles is featured throughout and this is as good as anything he's released imo! 5 stars all the way!
