Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

When little Scott Reily's parents die in a car crash, the care of the infant boy is entrusted to his mother's brother, Michael, a rising advertising executive who happens to be single--and gay. The first half of Quinn's debut novel is told in the third person and concerns Michael's struggle to retain custody of Scott over the objections of most of the boy's family. Chief among the complainants is Scott's paternal grandfather, a former U.S. senator who forces a courtroom showdown that ironically highlights the family's erratic behavior and wins Michael custody rights. After this, the narrative reins are taken over by an adult Scott, who tells of his Auntie Mame -style upbringing by Michael: "Everything that happened was somehow larger than life--out of control." Unfortunately, Quinn has neither the cleverness nor the wit of a Patrick Dennis. His attempts at campy dialogue are affected, and some of his characters are cartoonish stereotypes of gays. To his credit, however, the author has a flair for plot twists that just won't quit. In another courtroom drama that ensues when Scott and Michael fight for control of the boy's estate, the judge makes a comment that might describe this novel: "It was like leafing through the scripts from Dynasty ." From Library Journal

This snappy, fast-paced novel tells the story of Michael, a gay ad executive who is unexpectedly awarded custody of his nephew, Scott, after Scott's parents die in an automobile accident. Scott's grandfather, a powerful North Carolina senator, is vehemently opposed to this arrangement and launches a public court battle. After Michael wins, the story continues to unfold, albeit now though the eyes of Scott, who grows up in the center of Michael's eccentric and madcap world. Scott watches his uncle with adoration, amusement, and occasional anger. Quinn's talent for writing satirical and biting dialog is evident, so it's not surprising that the movie rights to this novel have already been optioned. Recommended for large public library collections and all gay and lesbian fiction collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars I laughed, I cried, I read it again, April 27, 2000
This review is from: Say Uncle: A Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was one that I just grabbed while wandering through a bookstore, and I fell in love with it as I read it. The characters are charming, well developed, and engaging. I laughed out loud, I cried real tears, I wanted the story to keep going. Each character was somehow flawed, and yet each had at least one redeeming quality. I have lent my copy to a number of my "bookish" friends, and every one of them has enjoyed it. It's a fantastic read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming and Hysterical, July 14, 1999

This review is from: Say Uncle: A Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
Shaw did a wonderful job in this book. After reading it, I gave copies to all my gay friends, who love it. It carries a wide range of emotions and is highly entertaining. I think anyone who knows anyone who is gay should read this book. The characters are warm and the story line is full of surprizes. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
