I was glad--Casey and her seemingly hard-boiled friend are both kids that touch your heart, and deserve a reasonable solution to their problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carolyn's Review, December 6, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Say Yes (Mass Market Paperback)
I read a Nutmeg book titled Say Yes by Audrey Couloumbis. It is an amazing realistic fiction story that is set in present time.
The main characters in this story were a 12 year old girl named Casey, a 16 year old boy named Paulie, and Sylvia, Casey's stepmother. Casey is a quiet kid who will do almost anything so she won't have to go to foster care. Paulie is a foster child in the same apartment building Casey lives in with her stepmother Sylvia. Paulie is the "NY townie" and is like a big brother to Casey as they both share something in common. Sylvia is a loving stepmother who would like someone she could lean on for help and support. The people she had chosen to be with have not been Casey's favorites!
The main problem in the book occurs when Casey has to face something many children could never dream of -- she comes home and nobody is there! Casey has to choose between breaking the law or ending up someplace where she would be unhappy. It is a difficult decision, but she doesn't want to go to foster care.
My favorite part of the book was when she found out what she had to do to survive. I was shocked to read what Casey would have to do and the guts it would take to do it. This was my favorite part because it was really suspenseful since I didn't know what she would say or do next.
I really enjoyed reading this book because it had a lot of excitement and surprises which pulled me in and made not want to put the book down. I would recommend this book to people who love surprises and action, since this book was filled with them! I really am glad I read this book, and you should take the time and read this amazing story about Casey and her difficult problems she has to solve.

4.0 out of 5 stars Elle's Book Review, December 1, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Say Yes (Mass Market Paperback)
Say Yes, by Audrey Couloumbis takes place in New York City, in modern times. It is realistic fiction, and is kind of like a survival story. It is in a form where the sentences are very short and the chapters are only about 1-5 pages long.

The main character in this story is Casey, who is a twelve-year-old girl. Another main character in the story is Paulie, who is the around fifteen-year-old adopted son of Mr. Loach, the super of Casey's apartment. There is also Fran, Casey's step-grandmother, Sylvia, Casey's stepmother, and Karen, Casey's best friend. In the book, Casey and Sylvia are living together in an apartment. Then, one day when Casey comes home from school, Sylvia is gone. Her clothes aren't in her closet and some of her belongings are missing from her room. Casey has to survive by herself so Children's Services don't take her away to be adopted, since she has no other family. She isn't left with much money, and it soon runs out. Then, Paulie offers Casey a choice where she could have enough money for rent and food for a long time, but it's against the law. Casey has to decide whether or not to take the choice, and how to survive if she doesn't.

The main problem of the book is all throughout the book. Casey has to hide that nobody is taking care of her, and she has to act perfectly normal around everybody. She also has problems with money, and the apartment turns into a junkyard because there is nobody to clean it. The problems of this book are person vs. person, person vs. self and even person vs. society in some cases.

My favorite part of the book was when Casey goes to the zoo to escape all her problems and to just relax. There are flashbacks of what she and Sylvia used to do at the zoo, and the things they paid attention to most of all. This was my favorite part of the book because it is different than the rest of the plot; it's just a break where Casey shows a different, more sensitive, side to herself.

I liked this book a pretty good amount because it has a good storyline and it's interesting, but it's kind of creepy in some parts and even a little disgusting. I would recommend it to people who like survival stories, since Casey has to live on a little amount of money that Sylvia left behind. It's a kind of sad book too, and it has a good amount of suspense and action. It's a unique book that I think most people would like. I would give Say Yes 4 stars. * * * *

I read an okay book titled Say Yes by Audrey Couloumbis. It is a realistic fiction book set in modern time in a city. It mainly takes place in and near a 12 year old girl's apartment which she shares with her stepmother, Sylvia.
The main characters in this story were a 12 year old girl named Casey and a teenage boy named Paulie who Casey later becomes friends with.
The main problem in this story is when Casey comes home to an empty apartment; she doesn't worry too much because she just thinks that Sylvia just took a late shift and Casey goes about her day not caring where Sylvia is and what she is doing. But when Sylvia hasn't showed up in the morning, Casey knows something's not right. Sylvia's left money in an envelope on the fridge, but Sylvia never does that. She wonders what happened to Sylvia and she is determined to find out. She explores many new places, and gets into trouble now and then since she's alone. She does things she's not used to doing, and sometimes those things aren't very good. Casey has no idea what has happened to Sylvia and she doesn't know if Sylvia will come back. Casey thinks that the police will put her in foster care, so she's got to find help. That's when she bumps into Paulie, who is willing enough to help her out. Casey really wants to get his help, but she find out that it comes at a price. If Casey says yes, then she'll be breaking the law and she could get into even more trouble if they're caught. But if she says no, she doesn't know how she'll make it through. She wishes that Sylvia had never left her. Casey feels really mad at Sylvia but at the same time sad. Sylvia was one of the last people that were close to her. If Sylvia never returns, then who will Casey count on?
My favorite part of the book I can't tell you because it could give something away!
I didn't really like this book because it was rushed at the end. I liked it in the beginning and in the middle because it as much more suspenseful and exciting. There was a lot more action in these parts.
I would recommend this book to people who like mysteries and suspense because it is a mystery (Sylvia has disappeared!) and it has lots of suspenseful parts in it. I would recommend this book to people of any ages, because it really is a pretty good book.

This review is from: Say Yes (Mass Market Paperback)
I read a realistic fiction book titled Say Yes by Audrey Couloumbis. It is a suspenseful book set in the present time in New York.

The main characters in this story are Casey Sylvia Paulie, and Fran. In this story Casey, a twelve-year-old girl, comes home and her nice stepmother Sylvia is gone! Casey is worried. How is she going to get food? She could get put in children services because she had no other family! Paulie, the landlord's son, offers to help her.

Paulie has an idea to help Casey get money. This idea is illegal. Should Casey do it? If she doesn't, she probably won't survive. Her rent bill is coming up soon, she has no money or food, and Sylvia has been gone a while. Will she take Paulie's advice?

My favorite part was when Paulie comes to help. This is my favorite part because Casey would have been helpless with out him. If you read the book you will see some of the wonderful things he does!

I really like this thrilling book because it has lots of adventure and suspense. I would like to recommend this book to all people who like realistic fiction. I liked this book because you feel like you are in the story and you know the characters by heart, and I would give it five stars. You will really enjoy this good read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Say Yes, November 22, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Say Yes (Mass Market Paperback)
Say Yes
The book I read was called Say Yes by Audrey Couloumbis. The book takes place in many places in a city, and in Casey's apartment.

The book is about a girl named Casey who lived with her stepmother Sylvia. Casey's Father died when she was not six but ten. The main character in the book is Casey. Casey's personality changes through out the book. She makes many hard changes in her life, which changes her personality.
When Casey has to go through those tough decisions she seems scared inside, not happy. Another character that's important in the book is Paulie.
Paulie really helps her with her problem and is one of her best friends. Paulie is a very sneaky and convincing guy. Paulie can really sneak into places without getting caught. Casey thinks he is really annoying sometimes.

Casey's problem is that one-day when Casey comes home from school she notices that Sylvia is not home. Usually Sylvia is home when Casey comes home. Casey really thinks she will be coming home late, but the next morning when Sylvia wakes up Sylvia is still not there. Now she knows something is wrong. Now she is worried that the police will take her away to foster care. The only help she gets is Paulie her landlords son.
When she needs food and money the only things she can do is starve or steal!

My favorite part of the book is when Paulie try's telling her (or convincing her) that if she doesn't do something that she doesn't want to she could get hit by a car and die, walk in the road at the wrong time and die, and etc. I like that part because it really tells you what kind of person Paulie is and how that helps Sylvia later in the book.

I would give these book 4 stars, because it is a very exciting book and it is a good survival story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart Thumping Adventure, July 12, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Say Yes (Hardcover)
First let me begin by saying the first review listed has erroneous information. Casey is not 6 but 10 when her father dies. He has only been dead for 2 years when the story opens.
This story deals with a very timely issue;child abandonment. Casey has to decide how she will survive in NY after she realizes her stepmother, Sylvia, has left her. She's only 12 years old and has been left with $55. She has to decide who she can trust with her secret. Casey soon realizes that she has less in common with here best friend, Karen, and more in common with Paulie, the 16 year old, street smart foster child who lives in her building.
Paulie forges checks for Casey so she can pay the bills and then Casey owes him. How far is Casey willing to go to make money to survive? Paulie is not only her partner in crime, her mentor, but her surrogate parent who makes sure she does her homework and keeps going to school so the authorities won't check up on her. Then Casey and Paulie must face the most daunting challenge of all -- Paulie's beatings by his foster parent. Who can they trust now?
Casey and Paulie meet an assorment of characters and face a myriad of challenges head on that lend themselves to "what if" discussions with your children. There are moral and ethical issues raised that make young adults stop and think.

5.0 out of 5 stars Murphy's Book Review, November 22, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Say Yes (Mass Market Paperback)
I read an excellent booked titled Say Yes by Audrey Couloumbis. It is a realistic fiction book set in modern time, in NYC. It mainly takes place in a 12 year old girl's apartment, who shares it with her loving stepmother.

The main characters in this story were a 12 year old girl named Casey, and a teenage boy, who she later on becomes good friends with, named Paulie.

The main problem in this story is when Casey comes home from school one day and sees that her stepmother, Sylvia, isn't there. Casey does nothing and goes about the day thinking that Sylvia has a late shift for work. But when the next day comes and Sylvia is still nowhere to be seen Casey knows that something is not right, gets mad at Sylvia, sad too and also sees that there is an envelope attached to the refrigerator door filled with money. Casey doesn't know what to do and doesn't want to be put into foster care since Sylvia is her only family left. Casey bumps into a teenage boy named Paulie who is willing to help Casey survive and to pay the rent. But when Casey finds out that she'll be breaking the law if she says yes to Paulie, she gets stuck, confused, mad and wished that Sylvia had never left. But if she says no, she doesn't know how she will survive. Later in this story Casey meets more people, good and bad. She finds many more places, small and big to hind in. She also finds herself running away a lot and finds that lots of people come to her apartment door. But one day when she opens her apartment door, someone unaccepted shows up. Will Casey say, yes, to Paulie? Who will be there when Casey opens the door?

My favorite part of this book was when Paulie showed up at Casey's door bruised, hurt, and had a couple of broken bones. This was my favorite part of the book because of the way Casey reacted when Paulie showed up at her door because she took care of Paulie and iced him and it really showed how much Casey like to have Paulie as a friend. Now this might not sound too exciting but if I keep on explaining my favorite part then I'll probably give something big away.

I think this book was really good because it had a lot of suspense and lots of big problems that lead to the biggest one of all. I would recommend this book to people that like suspenseful, mystery like books, to people who don't like reading and to people who only like books if they're really, really good. I would recommend this book to those people because I'm the kind of person that likes books only if they're really, really good and this book was perfect for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Samantha's Book Review, November 22, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Say Yes (Mass Market Paperback)
Say Yes is a novel by Audrey Couloumbis. It takes place in modern time, in New York. It is realistic fiction, and an excellent book about the tougher choices of life.
12 year old Casey is used to being alone in her apartment- but not for days on end. It has been a week or so since she saw her stepmother, Sylvia, and she's beginning to worry that her secret about living in the apartment on her own is leaking out of her bedroom and into her neighbor's ears.
Unfortunately, her loneliness has reached the noticing of a teenage boy- one who says that he can fix Casey's problem with signing checks and official business. But the boy, Paulie, does this for a price.
Casey needs to work against the law. Casey hesitantly accepts the deal, needing more money with her checks to get signed and all. After performing the illegal crime, she feels terribly guilty- and worried. People saw her running away, and she could easily get reported- and arrested! She needs to lay low for a few days; according to Paulie ... Will anyone find her? And will Sylvia return before they do to protect her? Will Sylvia ever return?
My favorite part of the book is when Casey moves in to live with her Grandma, Fran. I like this part because the story is beginning to show a few scattered hints of a happy ending. Paulie gets away from his terrible adopted parents and finds a better life, and there seems like there is a slight chance of finding Sylvia...
Personally, I really didn't like this book. It doesn't really have you holding suspense on for a while, and I don't like books that involve law breaking or anything. It also seemed like it was always going to turn out bad, and I like books that start to turn good, then take a little swish- I'd give this book 3 stars. The plot is impressive, but the details and elaboration is somewhat hard to find. But I definitely recommend this book for someone who likes a mix between mystery and suspense, all fit into this quick read.
