Book Description

Malory Family September 1, 1997
Her parents' death has left Kelsey Langton penniless - and responsible for the well-being of her younger sister, Jean. Kelsey knows that the only way to avert their doom is to allow herself to be sold at auction. Resigned to becoming the plaything of a well-heeled gentleman, she gets more than she bargained for. Lord Derek Malory is the highest bidder - a dashing rakehell from a family of charming London rogues. Enthralled by the lovely young woman with shining eyes and dark hair, he purchases her to be his mistress, unaware of the true worth of his prize. He never imagined that this woman he so frivolously acquired would be blessed with all the attributes he was looking for in a wife - grace, wit, intelligence as well as beauty. He certainly never expected to fall in love.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Romance write Lindsey stays true to form?and formula?as she continues to chronicle the romantic entanglements of the Malory clan. Set in Regency England, sometime between 1811 and 1820, the latest Malory novel (after Love Me Forever) includes the three stock romantic figures: a Virgin, a Villain and a Rogue. The Virgin is Kelsey Langton, who willingly agrees to be auctioned off in a London whorehouse to pay her uncle's debts and ensure her younger sister a marriageable future. The Rogue is handsome Lord Derek Malory, who plunks down a fortune to make Kelsey his mistress rather than see her bought by the Villain, Lord David Ashford, an insane sadist who takes his sex with a healthy splash of blood. The implausible set-up quickly becomes ludicrous as Malory falls in love with Kelsey, but her unwillingness to reveal her true background prevents a wedding. Malory's ardor for Kelsey is inflamed when Ashford kidnaps her, necessitating a heroic rescue in a grisly dungeon where Kelsey is on the verge of being whipped and mutilated for Ashford's pleasure. In the end, family secrets fall from both the Malory and Langton family trees like rotten apples while social conventions are swept aside. Scant historical detail and 20th-century dialogue make this unfortunate novel even more far-fetched. (Nov.) republish the four previous Malory novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars #5 of the Mallory Series, November 13, 2000
By
J. Austin "jodylync" (Dublin, OH United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Orphaned, Kelsey Langston and her young sister go to live with their aunt and uncle. One night, Kelsey finds her drunken uncle contemplating suicide. He his lost all of the family's money. He convinces Kelsey to sacrifice herself by becoming a rich man's mistress. For the love of her aunt and sister, Kelsey does. Derek Mallory notices an auction going on in one of the gentlemen's clubs he is visiting. A pretty, blushing girl is being auctioned off and the high bidder is Ashton, a known sadist. Unable to let the girl go to such a violent man, he bids on her and wins a mistress. But there is something about this young woman. Her speech and mannerisms are too fine. Surely she isn't a Lady. Derek soon realizes that he enjoys his mistress' company, but trouble is afoot. Ashton doesn't like losing to Derek. He intends to have Kelsey for himself. And he intends on punishing her for not belonging to him.

Kelsey is gentle, kind-hearted, resourceful, and charming. She is a very likable character and easily falls in love with Derek. Derek is protective, sexy, and caring. An absolute fantasy man. He and Kelsey sizzle together! A perhaps improbable story, but that is what it is. A tale of passion and love coming through. A wonderful addition to the Mallory books.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Malory's are the best!, April 17, 2000
By A Customer
I received all the Malory novels for Christmas, just as SAY YOU LOVE ME was released in hardcover. I read them all, and went out and bought this book, as I could not wait until she published it in paperback. I am a huge fan of family series, and this one is fabulous. I love all the male characters, and their feminine counterparts are extremely exciting as well. I especially love how Reggie's two uncles continually berate Nicholas, years after they were married. I wanted to add, for the reader in Rochester, NY, who submitted her review on Feb 12, that the order for the Mallory novels is as follows: LOVE ONLY ONCE, TENDER REBEL, GENTLE ROGUE, THE MAGIC OF YOU, SAY YOU LOVE ME, and THE PRESENT. Hope you all enjoy them as much as I have!

3.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it for a while, September 4, 2005

Basically, I liked it, but when I get down to it, no I suppose I didn't. Hmmm. Well, it starts lowly (I didn't say slowly), the girl heads to a brothel (thanks to her dumb drunk desperate hysterical uncle), she gets into sick sad trouble, turns out she didn't have to be at the brothel, she hides away and gets sick, gets kidnapped, a scandal starts, oooh, which is cured suddenly somehow (can't remember how). There wasn't much strength nor energy here. However the kidnapper sadist was something... but so scary! Awful... I hope that doesn't happen to anyone. It's too bad that it already does. Seeing it in the book was a sad thing. But it was so wonderful how she got rescued. This is not one of those sweep-your-heart-away, give you something to remember, smile gently over romances. There are very few romances that fit into this category. If you want the best of the best, this one will disappoint on one level or the other, depending on the reader. What I mean to say is this book wont get you high. And if it wont, what's the point? You gotta make it all worth your while. I've just become picky, like some other reviewers, which is to hopefully result in great book-reading experiences, and no wasted ones.
