Beautiful Melody,

His voice is so smooth like butter. I love the melody and I don't care about the fact that he repeats the same lyrics over and over again. It's a sweet, short song that ingrains itself into your mind, ensuring that you'll be repeating the lyrics for days on end.

Reviews are missing the message of the song...,
This review is from: Say (MP3 Download)
I think some of the other reviewers are missing the message of the song. The key to this songs overwhelming success (which it is) is the simplicity of it. Yes, the "say what you need to say" chorus is repetative, for a reason. It takes you to a place that sets a certain mood and keeps you there. A very, very romantic song for those who notice it.

Lovely. Without knowing who, the song had me. It'd taken me. It's taken me. I adore this song. Yes, it's different from his previous music, but in a beautiful way. The gentle picking of the guitar coupled with the sweet sway of the strings is heaven. The song's message is capturing, too.
When I first heard he had another single out, I wasn't really interested. Until by chance I heard it, and now I've fallen in love.

If the song's message resonates with something going on in your life, it's going to resonate in a BIG way, because it is a powerful elaboration of that theme. (The repetition is part and parcel of that.) It was an excellent match for the story of the "Bucket List" movie and some people will find it applies to their lives as well as the lives of the characters in the film.
If, however, it doesn't speak to what's happening in your life, you're going to find it trite and monotonous. I think this says less about the work itself than about different people's receptiveness to different things at different points in their lives. For me, this song did something important and useful. For someone else, it's just going to seem simplistic and boring. Those are both valid viewpoints, I think. But clearly there were enough folks in the first category to make it a decent-sized commercial success. Just sayin.

WORST SONG EVER,
This review is from: Say (MP3 Download)
The chorus is repeated 40 times in this song. 40 TIMES!!! How could anybody with a brain talk about what a deep meaning this song has when he spends 3/4 of the time repeating the same 6 words over and over? The fact that this idiot is considered a great musician for producing crap like this is really depressing. I'd rather listen to an alley full of cats in heat.

As with most of John Mayer's material, this is a beautiful song with terrific lyrics. Always thoughtful stuff.

I heard this for the first time at a very critical part of my life...,

It was awkward, but great to hear for the first time. I was in the hospital for some time, and heard it and it made me want to tell more, but I held back.
It's kinda complicated since I don't wanna say everything, but this song kept telling me to "say what you need to say". Well, maybe one day....:) Anyway, good song but can get repetitive. 4 stars.

I love this song!!! This song is off the soundtrack of the movie "Bucket List" with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman (Great movie, by the way). I have all of his CDs and just purchased his Live in LA Concert Video. My girlfriend and I just saw him Live in Concert on the 29th of July in Cricket Wireless Center in Chula Vista (San Diego Area), CA. He is such a tremendous guitarist and musician. He played for 2 hours straight and the crowd was going crazy! If you have a chance to hear him in concert, don't pass it up!!! I would buy any song by John Mayer!!!

I think those that actually like this song are the ones missing the point. The message in no way makes up for the repetitiveness of the song. Who cares about the lyrics if you want to change the station whenever this song comes on? So are you saying that if he came out with a song that just said peace and love over and over and over again for 3 minutes it would be good?
I'd rather listen to a dumb song with ridiculous lyrics that has a good beat than a song like this any day. |
