Deeply romantic, exotic concertos,
By
This review is from: Saygun: Cello Concerto Op. 74; Viola Concerto Op. 59 (Audio CD)
This is refreshing and stimulating music and you don't have to be a string concerto nut, as I am, to enjoy these works. To my ears, Sayguns music is a blend of late european romantic styles and complex 20th century harmony and rhythm containing distinct exotic flavors (in this case, Turkish). Lots of Tam Tam and exotic percussion is spread throughout both of these works. I honestly don't know which concerto I like better. The whole disc is well performed and recorded (I hear more and more with each listen). The hugh orchestra and soloists are extremely dedicated here and the liner notes are surprisingly informative. Buy it and try it.
