Being in the mist of animal grief right now I just recently got this book. One of the things the author says is why one is grieving is to not look at the animal's toys or photos until later. Well the first thing I wnat to do is to have their photo out. She seems to contradict herself when she says there is no right or wrong way to heal then she says don't do this or...

This book approaches a very delicate and sad subject with such sincerity, understanding and discernment. Considering that many do not know how to deal with the loss of a pet companion this guides the reader through the various stages of grief, what to expect, what NOT to expect and a variety of other helpful topics.

A must for all true animal lovers who need true compassion and a respite from those who may not understand just what it means to those who are in deep grief.

Many of my pages are highlighted and have been read, re-read and will probably be read again.

Give this gift to yourself in this time of need or if you know of someone in pain give this to them. It can only help.

Still grieving over the loss of my wonderful pet but this is a tremendous source of support ready to read whenever I want to or am able to.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for someone who has lost a pet, December 22, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Saying Good-Bye to the Pet You Love: A Complete Resource to Help You Heal (Paperback)
This is the best pet loss book I have ever seen. Most books on pet loss are somewhat scientific, or they read like a textbook describing grief and bereavement. This book is very different- it not only explains loss and grieving, it has self- help ideas and exercises to help you work through the grief. This book is sweet, thoughtful and poignant, and I would recommend it to anyone going through the sadness of losing a beloved pet.

On Nov 2nd my husband and I put our 15 year old dog, Beaner, to sleep. Beaner was my first dog. I had a tremendous flood of emotions following his passing, and I scoured Amazon looking for a book to help understand/relieve some of what I was feeling.

This book was truly wonderful. I specifically remember two things that helped me a great deal. One was sitting down and writing out my memories of Beaner. While it was sad to do this - I remembered so many good things (and humorous) that this was actually quite healing.

The second thing was that it helps to have some sort of simple ceremony so that you can feel the release and/or closure of your time with your friend.

My husband, who isn't a huge reader - also picked up this book to find some help. He also found it to be extremely helpful, and was moved to tears with the story of the Rainbow Bridge.

I definitly recommend this book to anyone that has experienced a recent loss of their pet friend.

I gave this book to my mom who recently lost her dog. This devasted her and left her all alone. She talked to her friends only for them to laugh She felt then she had nooneto talk too. After reading and doing some of the exersizes she said it has termendously helped her with her grief process. I only wish more therapists would reckognize a need for this unique group of people who love their animals as their families. Thanks to the authors for this great book.

Animal companions are often our best friends and yet their lives are far shorter than ours. This book gently helps the reader when faced with and after the death of a beloved pet. An excellent resource for therapists, vets, animals trainers and the rest of us who love our pets.

Hats off to the authors for a careful and gentle approach to a topic few of are willing to address.

This book should be in every household with pets, so it will be handy when you have to Say Good-Bye.
I wish it had been available when I lost my dogs and cats in the past.
It is a perfect book for adults, children and seniors.
I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Help in my time of need, November 25, 2006

Most people don't understand the special bond between people and exotic companion animals. I refer to Toby, my green iguana. When Toby died last year, a friend referred me to this self-help book. I'm not a big fan of self-help books, but "Saying Good-Bye to the Pet You Love" turned out to be a real help. The truth is, there is little social support for people who grieve the loss of companion animals -- especially companion animals that aren't furry or don't catch Frisbees. As I read the book, I realized my grief was turning me into a social recluse. The step-by-step suggestions in the book helped me out of bed and back into my life again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps Works as a Textbook, But Not for Those Grieving, January 12, 2007

This review is from: Saying Good-Bye to the Pet You Love: A Complete Resource to Help You Heal (Paperback)
I ordered this book and waited for it eagerly, based on "Search Inside" reading I did on Amazon. I hoped the chapter devoted to guilt experienced by "animal guardians," as the author considerately calls pet owners, when euthanasia or an accident precipitates a pet's death would speak to me. Therefore I was surprised to find the book more clinical than inspirational. I also found it emotionally distant from its subject...which perhaps is to be expected, considering that it was written by a psychologist. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone suffering from deep grief over a lost pet.

I got this book soon after I lost my 10-year-old Persian male soul mate, and it really helped me through a time of great sorrow. There are exercises to do that help you work through your grief and help you to understand your feelings. I highly recommend it for anyone dealing with the loss of a pet.
