This review is from: La Scala: Concert 03 03 03 (Audio CD)
Ludovico Einaudi is, in my opinion, one of the most outstanding composers living today. His music is not easily labeled: It possesses the repetition and reliance on arpeggios that is characteristic of minimalist music, but it is much more melodic and pleasing to the ear than most minimalist music. His music gets lumped under the "new age" category frequently, but it possesses a sophistication that the genre often lacks. If you like the music of Yann Tiersen, Philip Glass, and George Winston, you will in all probability like Einaudi.
I am not normally a fan of live concert CDs, but this album is absolutely stunning. It could easily substitute as a "Greatest Hits" compilation, and in fact I would probably recommend buying this one instead of the "Echoes" collection to somebody wanting an introduction to Einaudi's work. My favorite track on the album was "I due fiumi," which is an absolutely beautiful piece to begin with, but in the "La Scala" concert Einaudi added an improvised bridge toward the end of the piece that is breathtakingly gorgeous and takes it to an even higher level. I had the good fortune to see Einaudi play in San Francisco in his debut U.S. tour. The concert was everything I had hoped and imagined it would be, but it was over all too soon. The La Scala CD allows me to re-experience again and again a sense of what it was like to hear my favorite pianist perform live. |
