Scala does beautiful things to pop music. The concept is simple: cover popular songs with choir and a piano (and occasionally a big of electronics and strings), but Scala and the Kolacny Brothers execute it with such wonderful arrangements and intricate performances that I end up listening to Scala's tracks much more than any of the originals. They know how to bring new life to old songs.

This album is a sort of "Best of Scala." In my opinion, they've included 4 masterpieces, 2 excellent songs, and some very-good-but-not-as-brilliant-as-the-rest songs.

--Masterpieces:
"Creep" is probably Scala's best-known song, thanks to its use in The Social Network trailer. And it deserves the attention; in my opinion, Creep is Scala at its best. The harmonies are perfect, and the piano work blends in flawlessly. If you thought Radiohead's original couldn't get any more somber and depressing, you've got it wrong. The song starts hushed and morose, builds to an emotive climax, and then drops off again, the choir even whispering the words "I wish I were special." The contrast between the build and then sudden hush again is what makes the song so solemn. (Note: The live version of Creep on this album sounds a little muddier than the single Scala has released separately, at least to my ears. Also note this is not the clean version of the song. That's sold as a separate single.)

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" is a whole new song when Scala sings it. It completely looses that sense of teenage rebellion and becomes 100% choral eeriness. The arrangement is very minor, soft, and slow. The vocal slide at "I do" gives you chills. The whole song would be a beautiful compliment to the aftermath of a tragic death in some suspense/horror film.

"Use Somebody" is excellent.

Today's free download led me to this mesmerizing group. The Kolacny Brothers are classically trained musicians who have pieced together the voices of the angels. Their first tour in America starts in April and I can't wait to see them when they come to Colorado. Don't bother listening to all the previews of the tracks....just download it already!

If you enjoy NEW,creative music, they are fantastic.
This CD is another in a long line of Home Runs.

I found them in a recent interview on NPR, have collected videos,
and ordered this CD from Switzerland before it was out in the US.

Fantastic Piano, perfect accompaniment.
You tube videos are great, and there are some on their website.

Many of the girls are younger then.

This group is a joy, and a testimonial to musical creativity reaching for the stars!

Boy they have been popular in Europe, Respire was super big in France.....
they are so refreshing ! Every time I watch the Abba Medley on YouTube, I smile from the beginning to the end.

Add this CD to your collection, then add some of their others!

You cannot go wrong !

I first came across Scala & Kolacny Brothers a few months ago via youtube. The first videoclip by the group I saw was their cover of The Cure's "Friday I'm in Love". I was immediately hooked by the vocals and the concept of re-interpreting modern music through classical/choral arrangements. I recently picked up a copy of their self-titled album and have been listening to it constantly. I really enjoyed the original tracks as much as the cover songs. I am particularly fond of the song "Seashells" and "Masquerade of Fools". As far as the cover songs, I absolutely adore the group's version of "With or Without You", "Creep", "Nothing Else Matters", and "Solsbury Hills". Overall great album. I enjoyed every single track.

This CD is gorgeous. The choir has magnificent talent. Every song is perfect. It actually made me like songs I had heard before and didn't care for. There's one in particular that was originally done by Metallica that I couldn't stand listening to before but they made me fall in love with the song and it's now one of the most played songs on my iTunes. I highly recommend this to all music lovers, where you like easy listening, (like myself) or your a heavy medal kind of person.

I purchased this album because I wanted a copy of the Radiohead creep cover that was used on the trailer for The Social Network. It turns out that I like every song on this album. I wish I could have found these guys earlier! Track 2, a cover of Peter Gabriel's Solsbury Hill is especially amazing. I can listen to that song over and over again.

The CD is of good quality, but after a few selections becomes fairly repetitive. I like it, but am not sure I would have purchased it. A few pieces might have been all I needed.

It's amazing how the voices of a choir can so radically transform a piece of music. That's what you have here. No matter the piece, the sound is haunting and will whisk you away to dusty attics and basements where things go bump in the night play their games. This is some incredible work and anyone who loves music will be able to appreciate the melding of innocence and, at times, darkness.
