5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners
For almost a year I was trying to figure out how to get started with what I wanted to do. I had a bunch of track, some rolling stock, and the benchwork -- but didn't know where to go next. This book has really helped, I use it so often as a reference as I go, that it is bent from where I hold it. The part on wiring was great -- not super in depth, but showed me exactly...

While maybe at one time this book used to be valid today it is grossly out of date and there are multiple inconsistentsies in the first several chapters that would not make this a great 'how to' and a great beginners book anymore.

The electrical section fails the current check, the couplers they recommend haven't been made by the company mentioned in over 15...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners, January 16, 2005
This review is from: N Scale Model Railroad That Grows - Step By Step Instructions for Bulding Your First N Scale Layout (Paperback)
For almost a year I was trying to figure out how to get started with what I wanted to do. I had a bunch of track, some rolling stock, and the benchwork -- but didn't know where to go next. This book has really helped, I use it so often as a reference as I go, that it is bent from where I hold it. The part on wiring was great -- not super in depth, but showed me exactly what I needed to know to wire the block, switches, and power. Pictures & illustrations are great and the text is easy to follow.

My only complaint is I think they should have a small section at the end that shows the final product from all angles to see what they built.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only book you need for N Scale Model Railroading, December 10, 2000

This review is from: N Scale Model Railroad That Grows - Step By Step Instructions for Bulding Your First N Scale Layout (Paperback)
As a person who waited and waited to start a hobby that was always in the back of my mind, this book finally made it a reality. I bought this book on Amazon.com and it was the perfect book for me. The book provided a huge amount of information that guides the reader through the steps and procedures required to get a N-scale model railroad up and running. The book gives you lists of materials you will need, and then tells you how to use them. The wiring, track, and background information is all there and it is easy to understand and use. Buy this book and then get started. I did, and it is a blast.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great beginners book teaching many basic techniques., August 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: N Scale Model Railroad That Grows - Step By Step Instructions for Bulding Your First N Scale Layout (Paperback)
As a newcomer to model-railroading in general, and N-Scale in particular, I found this book to be a marvelous source of information and inspiration for building my first set-up. If you carefully follow the plans and directions you can build an impressive operating model railroad and learn many basic techniques such as track-laying, block-wiring, building and detailing structures, creating mountains, tunnels, lakes, bridges; etc.

The book's project layout uses foam-core board for the layout base - the "benchwork." This simple, low-cost approach is not good for larger layouts or N-Track modules. But if you want a neat little layout to build and run trains around, this is a great way to get started.

Filled with tips for beginners and some tricks for old dogs, this book is a nice purchase to people wanting to try N scale or check some techniques on a very practical approach. The only drawback on the book is that while it is an introcutory book to model railroading, it doesn't concern on operating the layout (that's half the fun on model railroading!), but that can be easily covered by other books as well. BEst of all, the book does not present any complex technique, if you are a beginner go for it.

I recommend this useful book to beginners and experienced modelers in all scales. A lot of timely information presented in a relaxed format. The authors make building a model railroad a fun project using up-to-date materials and methods. Nice writing style and photography.

Good book for beginner (ME!) Has a lot of good info on how to, You can build simple oval, add to it in three stages. Goodly amount on scenery. Overall much better than slightly newer book N Scale Getting started in Hobby.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE book to have if you're thinking about starting a layout, November 14, 2006

If you've wanted to start a realistic-looking n-scale railroad layout (think beyond just setting up a loop to run around the Christmas tree), and aren't sure where to start or what it will involve, this is the perfect book. It's stuffed full of helpful pictures, detailed walkthroughs and examples of products to buy if you really really like the way they did a particular section.

The book covers the development of layout, starting out with minimal scenery and a single loop. It then adds a service yard... and a downtown area... and so on. Before you spend dollar one on track, rolling stock or even a piece of lumber, buy and read this book.

Excellent for beginners. Instructions permit the average person to create their own idea of a railroad. The instructions can be modified to create any layout.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great N Scale Starter Book, May 1, 2007
This review is from: N Scale Model Railroad That Grows - Step By Step Instructions for Bulding Your First N Scale Layout (Paperback)
After looking on-line for many different layouts and ideas for my first N Scale display I came across this book and am now very pleased I did. This book, (although somewhat outdated on some techniques and items listed) does an outstanding job of giving a beginner step by step instructions on creating a very enjoyable layout that will give you plenty of room to grow or start slow. I just started building this layout and will have this book by my side step by step. I will also be picking up some other books to compliment this one to help with the new DCC wiring and other modeling techniques that are out there today to make this hobby enjoyable. Thanks to this book it is going to be a wonderful display for our family.
