4.0 out of 5 stars a thorough drilling in basic music theory, March 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Scales, Intervals, Keys, Triads, Rhythm, and Meter: A Self Instruction Program (Norton Programmed Texts in Music Theory) (Paperback)
I have most of my adult and adolescent piano students work through this. By the book alone they gain only a superficial understanding of music theory, but they are thoroughly drilled, and I am saved a lot of time. I'd give this five stars except that I prefer the earlier editions. The new voice-leading section intimidates many students; I have my students skip the rhythm section because I teach rhythm according to Paul Creston's method in his PRINCIPLES OF RHYTHM. A book I have most of my jazz and rock students work through is Jeff Burns's PENTATONIC SCALES FOR THE JAZZ-ROCK KEYBOARDIST.
