Book Description

A hundred years ago, a treaty joined the seven provinces under a king and created a system of equal justice for nobles and commoners. The Sisters of Astraea were proclaimed the Judicators of the land, because they could tell truth from lie.

Each Judicator has been selected by one of the god Naga’s golden vipers that can sense truth and falsehoods. Now many nobles want to go back to being above the law. DUKE CHANEY is using this discontent to raise an army against the king and the judicators.

JOLA survived a childhood on the streets and as a bonded slave. When she has the chance to join the Sisters of Astraea as a Judicator, a judge of the realm, she seizes the opportunity. But, like the streets, justice and even survival are in doubt as nobles foment a rebellion that will tear the kingdom apart and place them once more above the law. Judicator Jola seeks to discover who is behind the conspiracy and becomes a target of their violence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice fantasy-court novel January 20, 2013
By Hub
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you like the sort reality tv that involves court and private/criminal cases, then you most probably will like this book.
And even If you are not a fan of that (like me for example) it's still possible that you will like the story.

In this case I found that each of the mini-stories that each case the judicators had to preside on was quite entertaining. An interesting twist on the normal setup is that in this case, the judging person can always detect the lie/truth, so getting to the bottom of things just takes a correct set of questions.

Besides the cases themselves I found the main plot rather interesting with quite a lot of action. The main characters are easy to like, the villains are easy to hate. Maybe it's not a complicated plot, but it was fun enough to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read and enjoy! January 4, 2013

Scales of Justice is the story of a young bond slave girl (Jola) who becomes one of her world's highly respected Judicators. The Sisters of Astraea are Judicators, a judge of the realm (a traveling circuit judge). The Judicators are highly trained in swordplay and hand to hand combat. They are chosen and are bonded with a golden deadly viper, who can unfailingly sense the truth or a lie when a person speaks. This is a book to be read over and over with enjoyment each time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable March 5, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found this book surfing through my recommendations and was pleasantly surprised. The format and characters were different from the genre norm. This book does ask you to believe an 18 year old woman that has been malnourished most of her life can become a master sword and knife fighter in 6 months. Though a standard genre premise, it does stretch my belief.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much with this book. Boy, was I surprised! I fell into it nearly as soon as I read the first page, which almost never happens to me anymore. Couldn't tear my eyes away.

Like all of the author books by this author, the main character is something special. The main character usually has that little something extra that makes her succeed. This book at well written characters and an engaging story line.
