This is the best comic book being published today, or at least, I believe, the best one I have read. Being a cast made up of creator-owned characters, the stakes are real, and any fate can befall any member of it. This was made known in volume two.
Another thing that makes Scalped great is that the characters talk very much like real people, or at least how I imagine real people would talk if living the lives of the characters within the context of the story.
I always tell people that this is the one serialized story that I cannot miss, and I believe it. However, reading it in trade as I do, I really only understand my own stated love for this work every five to eight months, or however often it is that a new trade comes out. It is superb.
Aaron has the single best approach to writing both chapters within a story arc and story arcs as chapters of the larger, overall work of any scribe in comics today. His pacing is unparalleled.
I absolutely love how inevitable every twist seems as it is happening, and immediately after. This is because, despite the seeming predictability, I am squirming every panel of the way, heart racing, rooting for nearly every cast member to somehow come out on top, or at least alive. Some of them manage this.
Also, Guera's art is really nice, though I didn't like it until volume two. I'm not positive, but my memory tells me that the coloring was not complementary early on. It may just be that I wasn't ready to like the art at first, though.
Basically, if you like comics and are not offended by cursing, cartoon nudity, etc., you should be reading this series.

The best show not on TV, November 4, 2011

There aren't enough superlatives for this review. This being the sixth in the series, chances are you're as enamoured of these characters and their world as much as I am and are maybe wondering if this book is as good as the last book. It's not - it's better!
The Hmongs are coming to town to settle a score with Red Crow while Nitz finds what he needs to bring Red Crow to justice. Carol Red Crow is in for a nasty surprise while Bad Horse faces down Diesel for the last time and dodges Red Crow's men to keep his undercover identity secret. Meanwhile Falls Down finds Catcher's secret and the solution to the mystery of Gina Bad Horse's murderer.
Suffice it to say, there is a helluva lot of action going on in this book which doesn't let up from the first page to the last. The writing is top notch as always, the characters and their stories become more and more interesting, especially Red Crow who is quickly becoming my favourite character for all his complexity.
If you're a fan, you'll devour this book in one sitting like me and if you're reading this and you haven't discovered "Scalped" yet, start reading this series, it's an incredible action/drama story that deserves a wider audience.

Dash, how low will he go?, June 12, 2010
This review is from: Scalped Vol. 6: The Gnawing (Paperback)
In this sixth installment in the series, all characters remain as dark, manipulative, murderous, scheming, doomed etc. as ever. Except for an Indian Sheriff who's trying to make sense of all the killings. In this Indian reservation, all kinds of trafficking and killings happen, and the FBI tries to arrest Chief Red Crow for the murder of a cop in 1975. However, it seems that everybody will die before the truth is out on that murder (and on another one too but shhh, no spoiler!). The co-creators, AARON and GUERA are back together for the 5 issues collected here, and this volume stands as one of the best in the series.
