Amazon.com Review

There's no denying it--kids love dinosaurs. Scan Command: Jurassic Park brings kids closer than ever to their thunder lizard pals as they struggle to find just the right genes to get them through the game's six tough levels.

The story, as usual, is secondary to the action: players must make their way through detailed swamps, ruined laboratories, and the inside of a volcano to defeat the evil Dr. Corts. Plenty of puzzles and dinosaur enemies stand in the way, and can only be defeated by using the right combinations of DNA collected by scanning bar codes from around the house or at friendly stores. Scanning becomes surprisingly addictive, even for adults, and players might find themselves spending more time with the peripheral than with the game itself. Putting the DNA together is a neat exercise in spatial thinking, but what it really comes down to is guiding the velociraptor, T. rex, or Spinosaurus through their missions.

Installation takes a bit more work than usual because of the scanning hardware, but this effort is rewarded with great gameplay. Unlike the films it is based on, the violence in this game is minimal and nonlethal. The dinosaurs are beautifully created here, and the DNA scanning keeps things interesting longer than most games of this type. (Ages 8 and older) --Rob Lightner

5.0 out of 5 stars Review from someone who's actually played the game, October 10, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Scan Command: Jurassic Park (CD-ROM)
I've actually played this game--unlike some of the other reviewers here :-( and I think it's great. The scanner is cool and lets you play the game even when you're away from the computer. You can scan almost any barcode and get special powers. I love going into grocery stores with my scanner and just scanning everything in sight! Even boring things like flour and toothpaste can have very strong powers attached to them. You have to experiment to find the really powerful stuff and that's part of the fun.
The graphics are really great and they're much better than graphics in most kids games. The story is interesting and the levels are fun without being impossible to get through. The battles are the best part. These dinosaurs really know how to fight. And even when you beat a bad guy, he doesn't die, he just slinks away. That part is so funny to watch!
There's supposed to be some super-powers hidden in different barcodes but I haven't found one yet. I am checking in with their website every few days for updates.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Kids Dinosaur Game Ever!, September 24, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Scan Command: Jurassic Park (CD-ROM)
As a parent, I'm extremely pleased with the level of attention that the makers of this dinosaur fighting game put into minimizing violent content. Much to my delighted surprise, I found that when a dinosaur is "defeated" in battle, they do not "die" but instead walk away with their heads hung in despair. In a world of ultra violent video games, it's nice to finally see someone showing the next generation that fighting only ends in sadness.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Game on the Planet, November 4, 2001

This review is from: Scan Command: Jurassic Park (CD-ROM)
This is the perfect game for people that like going to grocery stores and wanting some entertainment. This game has best kind of gameplay, graphics, sound, and action ever!! Scan bar codes with special dinosaur techniches like a t-rex super roar or an ultra tail whip, etc... Finally a game with action but no blood. The dinos don't even die when they lose a battle!!! They slump away with a sad face! I think that scan command is the best game on the planet!!!!
